Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO DISAPPEARED

Julian arrived at the Hale house at dawn.

He looked like a man who had aged ten years since the reception.

Elena let him inside because Richard wanted to hear everything in one room.

That did not mean she forgave him.

Julian understood immediately.

He did not try to sit beside her.

Richard placed an old photograph on the table.

Two young men stood outside a construction site.

One was Victor Rossi, Julian’s late father.

The other was unmistakably Graham Bell.

Younger.

More hair.

But the same face.

“Graham was my father’s brother?”

Julian whispered.

“Half brother,” Richard said.

Julian stared.

“My father never had a brother.”

“He did.”

“Why didn’t I know?”

“Because Graham disappeared from the Rossi family twenty-four years ago.”

Marlene had spent decades telling everyone Victor was an only child.

Richard explained.

Victor and Graham had inherited a small regional development company from their father.

Victor wanted to expand.

Graham wanted to sell.

They fought.

Badly.

Then money disappeared.

Nearly nine million dollars.

Victor accused Graham.

Graham accused Victor.

Lawsuits began.

Before anything reached court, Graham vanished overseas.

Three years later, he returned using his mother’s maiden name.

Bell.

“Why did you know him?”

Julian asked.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Because Hale Ridge bought distressed debt tied to the Rossi company.”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“You profited from my family collapsing.”

“I bought debt from a bank.”

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“And Graham.”

“Yes.”

Elena watched both men.

This was becoming exactly what she feared.

Every family had its polished version of history.

Apparently hers did too.

Richard continued.

“Victor eventually rebuilt. Graham went into finance. We crossed paths over the years.”

“And you never told me?”

“You were dating my daughter.”

“That seems like a reason to tell me.”

Richard looked at Elena.

“He’s right.”

She appreciated the admission.

Julian almost did too.

Then Rebecca entered carrying documents recovered from Marlene’s house after police secured it.

Marlene had not been arrested.

Yet.

But she had agreed to surrender her phone and computer through counsel.

Rebecca opened a file.

“The photographs started six years ago because Graham was tracking Richard.”

Elena frowned.

“Why?”

“Rossi Meridian.”

The company had existed on paper longer than Julian believed.

Originally under a different name.

Graham began acquiring old Rossi family debts through shell companies.

Marlene joined him later.

The plan was simple and ugly.

Consolidate the distressed properties.

Refinance them.

Then sell the portfolio once values recovered.

But the market turned against them.

Debt exploded.

They needed a guarantor.

Someone banks respected.

Richard Hale.

“So they watched Dad looking for leverage,” Elena said.

Rebecca nodded.

“Then you met Julian.”

Julian looked sick.

“Was that arranged?”

Nobody answered.

He looked at Elena.

“I swear to you, I met you by accident.”

“Do you know that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I bumped into you at Maya’s birthday dinner.”

“Maya worked at Vantage Crest.”

Julian stopped.

Elena remembered.

Her college friend Maya had invited her to a restaurant.

Julian happened to be there with colleagues.

They had talked for forty minutes.

He asked for her number.

Rebecca looked at Julian.

“Who suggested that restaurant?”

Julian’s face slowly changed.

“Graham.”

Silence.

“He moved our team dinner there that afternoon.”

Elena felt sick.

Julian sat down.

“No.”

Richard’s expression turned grim.

“You may have chosen to fall in love with her.”

Julian looked up.

“But someone chose where you would meet.”

Elena walked toward the window.

She needed air.

Instead, she saw a dark sedan parked across the street.

Engine running.

“Dad.”

Richard moved beside her.

The car pulled away.

Rebecca immediately called security.

Julian’s phone buzzed.

Marlene.

He stared at the screen.

Then answered on speaker.

“Where are you?”

His mother was crying.

“Julian, listen to me.”

“Did Graham arrange for me to meet Elena?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Julian looked shattered.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“Before I met her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Graham believed Richard would never help us directly.”

“So you used me.”

“I introduced an opportunity.”

“You used me.”

Marlene sobbed.

“I never told you to love her.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“No. That part was inconvenient, wasn’t it?”

Marlene’s voice sharpened.

“You think Elena’s family is innocent?”

Richard stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Marlene heard him.

Her crying stopped.

“Richard.”

“Marlene.”

“You never told your daughter what you did to Victor?”

Julian stared at Richard.

Elena did too.

Her father’s face tightened.

Marlene continued.

“You want everyone staring at me like I destroyed the Rossi family?”

“Enough.”

“No.”

Her voice became furious.

“Tell them why Graham disappeared.”

Richard said nothing.

“Tell Julian who signed the affidavit accusing his father of fraud.”

Julian slowly looked at him.

Richard closed his eyes.

May you like

Marlene delivered the blow.

“It was you.”
