Chapter 6 - THE MUSIC BOX CALEB NEVER LOST

Caleb denied losing the music box.

That was the first surprise.

“I hid it.”

Adrian crouched in front of him.

“Why?”

“Mom told me to.”

The nine-year-old had carried that secret for four years.

His hands shook as he led us into the basement playroom.

Behind an old cabinet was a loose brick.

Inside sat a small wooden music box painted with blue stars.

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“Mom said nobody could have it except Dad.”

Adrian reached for it.

Caleb pulled back.

“When you were ready.”

Adrian froze.

“What does that mean?”

“She said you’d know.”

Children remember phrases even when they don’t understand them.

Adrian sat on the floor.

A man feared across Connecticut, brought to his knees by a nine-year-old holding a painted box.

“I’m ready.”

Caleb studied him for several seconds.

Then handed it over.

Inside were no jewels.

No money.

Just a memory card.

And a key.

Adrian loaded the card.

Financial ledgers.

Photographs.

Audio.

Grant meeting people Adrian had banned from his properties.

Payments from foundation accounts.

Threats against Elena.

One recording changed everything.

Grant’s voice:

“You think Adrian will choose you over what Father built?”

Elena:

“He already wants out.”

Grant laughed.

“He doesn’t know how.”

Then:

“If you take those boys, he’ll come after you himself.”

Elena answered:

“No. He’ll come after whoever frightened them.”

Adrian stopped the recording.

His face looked destroyed.

“She knew me better than I knew myself.”

I didn’t answer.

There was more.

The key matched a private safe-deposit system maintained by a bank in Manhattan.

The box had been untouched since Elena’s death.

Adrian called his attorney.

I grabbed his wrist.

“Which attorney?”

He stopped.

The same attorney Grant might have accessed for my background file.

Adrian understood.

He made a different call.

By afternoon, we were headed toward Manhattan with federal counsel Adrian trusted outside his usual circle.

Then Caleb ran after us.

“Nia!”

I turned.

He held out a folded paper.

“What is it?”

“I found it inside the box.”

It had been trapped beneath the lining.

Elena’s handwriting.

One sentence.

ADRIAN DOES NOT KNOW WHO CAUSED THE CRASH.

Beneath it:

ASK EVAN WHAT HE SAW FROM THE WINDOW.

I looked at Evan.

He had gone completely pale.

“I didn’t see the crash,” he whispered.

“What did you see?”

May you like

His eyes moved toward Grant’s empty chair.

“The man who left with Mom.”
