Chapter 5 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO OWNED HIS OWN BETRAYAL

Thomas Whitmore had built a financial empire worth billions.
He understood corporate structures.
Trust agreements.
Investment portfolios.
But nothing in his experience explained why a fraudulent company connected to his household manager was registered under his own name.
"That can't be right," he said.
Daniel Price remained on the phone.
"The ownership documents bear your signature."
"I never signed them."
"Then someone forged it."
Thomas looked toward Annie.
She sat beside Evelyn's hospital bed, holding her grandmother's hand.
She looked exhausted.
Frightened.
And painfully young.
Twenty-two years old.
A woman who had spent almost a year cleaning his mansion while someone stole wages from her paycheck.
Thomas felt something unfamiliar.
Shame.
He had always prided himself on being a fair employer.
Yet he'd allowed another person to control the lives of workers he barely knew.
"Daniel, preserve every document. Contact outside counsel and a forensic accounting firm. I want the payroll corrected and the employees protected."
"Understood."
"And notify the appropriate authorities."
Thomas ended the call.
Annie looked up.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
He sat beside her.
"Annie, I owe you an apology."
She blinked.
"For what?"
"For allowing this to happen in my home."
"You didn't know."
"That doesn't make it acceptable."
She looked down.
"Mrs. Bennett always said you didn't care about the staff."
Thomas shook his head.
"She was wrong. But I haven't done enough to prove it."
Evelyn watched him quietly.
Then smiled faintly.
"Your mother would have been proud to hear that."
Thomas looked at her.
"Not yet, Miss Evie."
He stood.
"First I need to make things right."
That evening, Thomas returned to the mansion.
Eleanor Bennett waited in the entrance hall.
She wore a dark green dress and a pearl necklace.
Her expression was composed.
"Mr. Whitmore. I didn't expect you back tonight."
Thomas removed his coat.
"We need to discuss payroll."
For the first time, her smile faltered.
"Payroll?"
"Yes."
"I'm sure Daniel can handle any minor discrepancies."
Thomas studied her.
"Eighteen million dollars isn't minor."
Eleanor's face drained of color.
"What?"
"You heard me."
She forced a laugh.
"Thomas, I think there's been a misunderstanding."
"Then explain Bennett Domestic Services."
Silence.
Eleanor slowly lowered her hands.
"I've managed this household for years. Certain arrangements were necessary."
"Did those arrangements involve stealing wages?"
"Of course not."
Thomas placed Annie's blue notebook on the table.
Eleanor stared at it.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"From Annie Carter."
Eleanor's eyes hardened.
"That ungrateful girl."
Thomas stepped closer.
"Be very careful what you say next."
She looked at him.
Then smiled strangely.
"You think you can threaten me?"
Thomas remained silent.
Eleanor leaned forward.
"Your father trusted me with matters he never shared with you."
"I've discovered that."
"Then perhaps you should stop asking questions."
Thomas held her gaze.
"Why?"
Eleanor's smile disappeared.
"Because if you keep digging, you'll discover your mother wasn't the only Whitmore who had secrets."
She reached into her handbag.
Removed a photograph.
And placed it on the table.
Thomas looked down.
It showed his father holding a newborn baby.
Beside him stood Eleanor Bennett.
On the back was written:
Our daughter. December 1999.
Thomas looked up in disbelief.
May you like
Eleanor whispered:
"Your father had another child, Thomas. And she's been living in your house for almost a year."
