Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO WASN’T DEAD

Gabriel’s mother was alive.

Her name was Alessandra Moretti.

For sixteen years, everyone outside a tiny circle believed she had died from an aneurysm in Italy.

The truth was uglier.

She had disappeared voluntarily.

Luca explained only after Gabriel gave permission.

Alessandra discovered Gabriel’s father, Salvatore Moretti, had used legitimate family companies to hide criminal money.

She threatened to take Gabriel and his younger sister Sofia and leave.

Salvatore retaliated.

Not by killing her.

By having her declared unstable.

Medical evaluations.

Sedatives.

Private facility.

The exact pattern Vincent had begun using against Gabriel.

History did not repeat accidentally.

Someone had studied it.

Alessandra eventually escaped with help from a family lawyer.

She lived under another name in Wisconsin.

Gabriel believed she died until he was twenty-seven.

Then he found her.

They kept contact secret because Salvatore’s surviving allies still had power.

Vincent knew the address.

Apparently.

Police found him outside her house.

He ran.

Was arrested after crashing his car two miles away.

Alive.

No cinematic shootout.

No bodies.

Gabriel insisted on that from his hospital bed.

I started understanding him differently.

Not softer.

More controlled than the legend.

Then something bothered me.

“Why would Vincent go to your mother?”

Gabriel looked toward the window.

“To get something.”

“What?”

He hesitated.

“Proof.”

“Of?”

“My father’s original medical scheme.”

Alessandra had kept records showing Salvatore bribed doctors to call her mentally unfit.

If those files became public, they would show a decades-old pattern of Moretti family members weaponizing private medicine to seize control.

Vincent’s current strategy would look less like concern.

More like imitation.

Then Gabriel told me the part Luca had not.

Vincent’s father had been Salvatore’s younger brother.

He helped engineer Alessandra’s confinement.

Vincent grew up hearing that Alessandra’s removal “saved the family.”

He believed medical control was a legitimate business tool.

“So he did this because he thought you were destroying the family?”

“Yes.”

“You were moving the clean businesses away from them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel’s face hardened.

“Because I’m tired.”

It was the simplest answer he had given me.

“Tired of what?”

“Men explaining that everything terrible is necessary.”

Silence.

He continued:

“My father said violence was necessary.”

“My uncle said bribery was necessary.”

“Vincent says stealing my body was necessary.”

He looked at me.

“At some point necessary becomes another word for cowardly.”

I thought about the four nurses who fled.

About everyone afraid to tell Gabriel he needed a hospital.

“Sometimes fear works both directions.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“You built a reputation where people would rather watch you deteriorate than risk making you angry.”

He said nothing.

“You’re not only surrounded by cowards.”

His jaw tightened.

“You trained some of them.”

That landed.

Hard.

For a moment I wondered whether Luca might actually have to protect me.

Then Gabriel looked away.

“You’re right.”

I did not expect that.

“Say it again.”

“No.”

I smiled.

His mouth almost did too.

Then Dr. Kim entered for the neurological exam.

Gabriel could move his right foot slightly.

Left toes too.

Progress.

Small.

But real.

He looked at me.

“You saw that?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t cry.”

“I’m not crying.”

“You look like it.”

“I’m tired.”

He smiled faintly.

Then Dr. Kim received a call.

Biomedical analysis.

The implanted device had been identified.

Not a weapon.

Not a poison system.

A modified medical telemetry sensor.

It could transmit limited physiological data.

Heart rate.

Movement.

Temperature.

Someone had wanted to know exactly how sick Gabriel became.

Luca stared.

“Why?”

I understood before anyone spoke.

Vincent did not merely want Gabriel impaired.

He wanted remote proof of when the impairment was severe enough to trigger his legal move.

Then the analyst added one more detail.

The device had transmitted data to a receiver.

Registered owner:

Moretti Family Medical Services.

Authorized administrator:

Sofia Moretti.

Gabriel went completely still.

His younger sister.

The woman everyone believed was living safely in London.
