Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND THE FIRE

Victor walked toward us without fear.
He didn't look like a criminal.
He looked like someone's grandfather.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
A calm smile.
That was what made him terrifying.
Dad stepped forward.
“You're under investigation.”
Victor laughed.
“By whom?”
“Federal authorities.”
“Which ones?”
Dad didn't answer.
Victor looked at Ryan.
“You disappointed me.”
Ryan's face hardened.
“You used me.”
“I gave you an opportunity.”
“You destroyed Claire's life.”
Victor looked at me.
“She was supposed to cooperate.”
“I never knew there was anything to cooperate with.”
“That was the point.”
He explained everything.
The Bennett Foundation had been built decades earlier by my grandmother to help families harmed by a massive financial scheme.
But some of the money was stolen.
Victor's family discovered the trust.
They spent years trying to gain control.
My marriage to Ryan was one strategy.
The fire was another.
The forged pregnancy records were meant to create a false legal narrative around future inheritance.
Natalie had been assigned to monitor Ryan.
Ethan had eventually turned against them.
My mother had discovered the plan and tried to stop it.
But Victor had one final weapon.
He pulled a document from his coat.
“Your grandmother's trust has been terminated.”
I stared at him.
“You're lying.”
“No.”
He handed it to me.
The document appeared legitimate.
My father's face changed.
“This signature…”
Victor smiled.
“Your grandmother's.”
“But she died years ago.”
“Exactly.”
Dad grabbed the document.
“This is forged.”
Victor laughed.
“Prove it.”
Then I remembered the silver locket.
The six-digit number.
The safe-deposit box.
I looked at Dad.
“The original trust agreement.”
He nodded.
Victor's smile disappeared.
“We're not going to Chicago.”
“We don't have to.”
I pulled out my phone.
“I already had someone access the box.”
Victor stared at me.
“What?”
I turned the screen around.
A photograph.
The original trust agreement.
The real signature.
The real date.
And a handwritten amendment.
Victor's face went completely blank.
“What did you do?”
“I learned from my husband.”
Ryan looked at me.
“What?”
“Never underestimate the person you think has nowhere to go.”
I had spent months gathering evidence.
The recording.
The photographs.
The financial documents.
The forged medical records.
Everything had been uploaded to a secure account.
And now—
I pressed send.
A message appeared.
Evidence package delivered.
Victor's phone began ringing.
Then Natalie's.
Then Ryan's.
Federal agents entered the garage from both sides.
Victor turned toward the exit.
There was nowhere to go.
Natalie dropped her weapon.
Ethan lowered his hands.
Ryan simply stood there.
An agent approached Victor.
“Victor Vance, you're under arrest.”
Victor looked at me.
“You think this ends here?”
I met his eyes.
“No.”
I looked toward Ryan.
“It ends with the truth.”
Victor smiled.
“You still don't know who your grandmother was protecting.”
Then he was taken away.
I turned to Ethan.
“What did he mean?”
Ethan looked at Dad.
Dad's expression was devastated.
“There is one more name in the original file.”
“Whose?”
He hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“Your mother's.”
