Chapter 13 - THE DNA TEST THAT REWROTE MY NAME

I had finally accepted that Vincent Avery was my father.

Then Margaret told me she wasn’t certain.

The truth was complicated.

Before marrying Vincent, she had loved another man.

Robert Reed.

The man I believed had been my father my entire childhood.

She thought the relationship ended before she became pregnant.

But the dates overlapped.

I stared at her.

“So you don’t know?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was afraid to test it.”

I laughed bitterly.

“After everything else, this is what scared you?”

She nodded.

“Because biology felt less important than the fact that both men loved you.”

That stopped me.

Independent DNA testing was arranged.

No drama.

No manipulation.

Just science.

The results arrived three days later.

Michael was not my biological brother.

Vincent was not my biological father.

Robert Reed was.

I cried.

Not because I was disappointed.

Because the man who taught me to ride a bicycle, fixed my school shoes, and held my hand when I was sick had truly been my father in every possible way.

Margaret cried too.

“I’m sorry.”

I hugged her.

“You don’t have to be.”

Michael smiled sadly.

“So I’m not your brother.”

I looked at him.

“You bet twenty million dollars on my honesty.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

“You’re stuck with me.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Good.”

Malcolm stood nearby.

“So that means…”

“You’re not my uncle.”

He smiled faintly.

“Apparently not.”

Something about that made both of us laugh.

After months of terror, a normal laugh felt miraculous.

The legal investigation continued.

Hourglass victims began receiving support.

Families were reunited.

Not every ending was happy.

Some people had lost decades.

Some never found missing relatives.

Truth didn’t repair time.

But it stopped the lies from continuing.

Then Malcolm approached me with an idea.

A foundation.

Independent.

Publicly audited.

Focused on identity fraud, elder exploitation, and family reunification.

He wanted me involved.

I stared at him.

“Why me?”

“Because you returned the watch.”

I laughed.

“That’s your qualification?”

“No.”

His expression softened.

“Because when you had every reason to choose desperation, you chose integrity.”

I thought about Tyler.

Mom.

Michael.

The life I wanted.

Then I nodded.

“I’ll consider it.”

Malcolm smiled.

“Good.”

But before I could leave, he opened the watch again.

“There’s something I never showed you.”

I frowned.

He pressed the inner casing.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny folded note.

His father’s handwriting.

Malcolm read it.

Then went completely still.

“What?”

He looked at me.

May you like

The note contained one sentence.

“The person who finds this watch should inherit the responsibility—not the fortune.”
