Chapter 9 - THE YACHT THAT CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The Elena had been declared destroyed.

Insurance records said it burned after Elena Falcone disappeared.

Yet there it was.

Moving through black Atlantic water with Lily aboard.

Victor had preserved it.

Why?

Adrian answered from inside the ambulance while medics treated his ribs.

“Because the evidence is hidden on it.”

Roman turned.

“What evidence?”

“Your mother never drowned.”

The triplets went silent.

Adrian continued.

“Elena discovered Victor was stealing from the family. She planned to meet federal investigators aboard the yacht.”

My pulse quickened.

“Nora was with her?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Victor intercepted them.”

Declan’s fists tightened.

Adrian looked at him.

“He didn’t kill Elena.”

Roman leaned forward.

“Then where is she?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

“You’ve had fourteen years.”

“I know.”

His voice broke.

“Nora got away. Elena didn’t.”

My father had spent years searching.

Secretly.

He remained dead on paper because Victor still hunted him.

Mom helped maintain the lie.

That was why she never told me.

Not because she didn’t trust me.

Because a ten-year-old couldn’t hide a father she desperately wanted.

I sat beside Adrian.

“You watched us struggle.”

Pain crossed his face.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you send money?”

“I did.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“Your mother returned it.”

That sounded like Mom.

Adrian almost smiled.

“She said unexplained money attracted questions.”

My anger remained.

But now it had edges instead of fire.

We could deal with that later.

Lily mattered now.

Coast Guard vessels intercepted the yacht before it reached international waters.

Victor threatened to hurt Lily if anyone boarded.

Negotiators stalled him.

Adrian stared at a photo of the yacht.

“There’s a hidden lower cabin.”

“Where?” Roman asked.

“Behind the engine-room bulkhead.”

“What’s inside?”

“Elena’s original records.”

“And Lily?”

“Victor will take her there.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because it locks from inside.”

Coast Guard officers used the old vessel plans to prepare entry.

Then a radio message arrived.

A second person had been located aboard.

Older woman.

Approximately sixty.

Restrained in the hidden cabin with Lily.

The triplets stared.

Roman whispered:

“Mother?”

Minutes later, officers boarded.

Shots were fired.

Victor was arrested alive.

Lily was rescued.

So was the woman.

She was rushed to shore.

Roman, Declan, and Gabriel stood together as the stretcher came down the dock.

The woman’s face was thin.

Hair white.

But all three brothers recognized her.

Elena Falcone opened her eyes.

Looked at them.

May you like

Then whispered:

“My boys.”
