Chapter 18 - THE DEATH CERTIFICATE

Frank's official death certificate listed a stroke.
But that did not prove anything sinister.
We were careful.
Rachel immediately warned me against making conclusions from family rumors.
So we didn't.
We requested records through proper channels.
Hospital records.
Medical examiner documents where available.
Estate documents.
The story became stranger with each document.
Frank had been hospitalized twice before his death.
The first time for elevated blood pressure.
The second time for unexplained weakness.
The night he died, he had spoken to Brenda.
According to his assistant.
The call lasted twenty-eight minutes.
Then he changed his estate documents.
That alone meant nothing.
But the next morning, the revised document had been withdrawn.
Why?
Because Frank's attorney reported receiving a call from Brenda saying Frank had “changed his mind.”
The attorney believed her.
Frank died three days later.
No confirmed foul play.
No proof of poisoning.
No secret killer.
Just an elderly man with serious health issues and one missing document.
That was enough to reopen questions.
Then Daniel brought us another piece.
A journal page from Evelyn.
She had written it twenty years earlier.
Frank told me Brenda wants the Caldwell file.
I refused.
He said she would destroy everyone if she didn't get it.
I asked him what was inside.
He said:
Proof that Louis knew.
I read the sentence three times.
Rachel asked:
“Knew what?”
Evelyn's answer came during a video call.
“Louis knew Brenda was altering trusts.”
“How?”
“Frank showed him.”
“So Louis knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't he stop her?”
Evelyn looked tired.
“He tried.”
“When?”
“Before his final illness.”
She explained that Louis had been preparing a complete restructuring.
But he was old.
His health was failing.
Brenda moved quickly.
She convinced trustees that Louis was no longer capable of making complex decisions.
His documents were challenged.
Some were delayed.
Others were never implemented.
The result?
A half-finished system.
Some protections survived.
Others didn't.
The most important protection survived in fragments.
The great-grandchild clause.
The descendant schedule.
And the successor trustees.
Mara.
Daniel.
Rachel.
My family line.
Four people Brenda never expected to stand together.
Then we found one more surprise.
Evelyn's box contained a photograph of Louis with a woman.
Not Brenda.
Not Sofia.
Not Evelyn.
A woman named Clara.
Howard recognized her.
“My father's secretary.”
“Who was she?”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“After Louis died.”
Rachel zoomed in on the photograph.
Clara was holding a baby.
A little boy.
Daniel.
But Daniel wasn't the only child in the photograph.
There was another baby.
A girl.
I stared.
“Who's that?”
Evelyn answered.
“She was born the same year.”
“Whose daughter?”
“We never knew.”
Rachel looked at the back of the photo.
A handwritten note.
CLARA — KEEP THEM TOGETHER.
My heart began pounding.
“Who are 'them'?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“But I do.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel had moved closer.
“That woman.”
“Clara?”
“Yes.”
“I saw her once.”
“When?”
“When I was seventeen.”
“Where?”
“The lake house.”
“What did she say?”
Daniel swallowed.
“She told me I had a sister.”
My breath stopped.
“Where is she now?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“But Clara might.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She died.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“How do you know?”
“She contacted me before she died.”
“What did she say?”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“She said the girl was still alive.”
Mara whispered:
“Where?”
Daniel looked at me.
“She said the girl had been raised under another family's name.”
Rachel slowly stood.
“Do you have that message?”
Daniel reached into his wallet.
A tiny folded paper.
He had kept it for years.
Three words.
FIND ELAINE MERCER.
My stomach tightened.
“Who is Elaine Mercer?”
Rachel froze.
I looked at her.
“Rachel?”
She didn't answer.
Instead, she searched her files.
Then looked up.
“That's Brenda's maiden name.”
The room went silent.
We had been searching for a missing girl.
A hidden heir.
Another erased branch.
And the clue had led directly back to the woman who had started all of this.
Brenda Ruth Mercer.
But the girl wasn't Brenda.
She had been raised under Brenda's family name.
Which meant Brenda hadn't simply hidden someone.
May you like
She had hidden her own relative.
And if that woman was still alive, she might know exactly what happened to Frank.
