Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE WHERE EMMA GREW TALLER

Westbridge House was in Connecticut.

Not an institution.

A private estate hidden behind pine trees and a stone wall.

Ownership passed through three LLCs.

Final payer:

Mercer Harbor Continuity.

We went at night.

Legally.

Julian brought the property receiver appointed after evidence showed the house had been funded through contested trust assets.

I stayed in the car at first.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I did not know what walking into a place where my daughter might have lived would do to me.

Hannah sat beside me.

“Owen was there.”

“Yes.”

“You think he helped hide them?”

“I don’t know.”

“If he did—”

“He may have thought he was protecting them.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps protecting people by destroying their lives.”

I turned toward her.

“You came to work for me because of Owen.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

There.

“Two years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I found a deposit.”

Owen’s dormant checking account received $40,000 three years after he vanished.

Payer:

MHC Family Services.

Same entity paying Hale.

Hannah traced it as far as she could.

Then applied for a housekeeper job inside my mansion under her maiden name.

“You were investigating me.”

“At first.”

“Did you think I killed him?”

Her silence answered.

“Fair.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

She turned.

“I am.”

“I would have suspected me too.”

That surprised her.

Then Julian opened the car door.

“You need to come inside.”

The house smelled empty.

Dust.

Old wood.

Cold fireplace.

I moved with my cane.

Hannah guided only when necessary.

Then she stopped.

“What?”

“Height marks.”

My heart stopped.

On a kitchen doorway.

Pencil lines.

Dates.

A child growing.

Hannah read them.

“Emma. Five years old.”

Another.

“Emma. Six.”

Another.

“Emma. Seven.”

I reached toward the wall.

My fingers found the shallow pencil indentation.

Three years of my daughter’s childhood preserved in plaster while I sat three states away believing she was buried.

I pressed my forehead against the doorway.

No one spoke.

Then Hannah found a box.

Children’s drawings.

Crayons.

A rabbit.

A house.

A woman.

A little girl.

And a tall man with dark glasses.

“What does it say?”

Hannah’s voice broke.

“Daddy.”

I could not breathe.

Emma remembered me.

Then another drawing.

Three people.

Caroline.

Emma.

A man labeled:

OWEN.

Hannah started crying.

I reached for her blindly.

For once, we stood holding each other because both of us had lost people to the same house.

Then Julian called from upstairs.

“Grant.”

His voice was different.

We followed.

Bedroom closet.

Hidden panel.

Inside:

Medical records.

Caroline’s.

She suffered traumatic brain injury.

Memory disruption.

Anxiety.

Paranoia.

Treatment notes repeatedly said:

Patient believes husband may have orchestrated attack.

Where did that belief come from?

Documents supplied by Elias Mercer.

Emails supposedly from me.

GRANT:

Get Caroline to Pier 17. Keep Emma with her. She’ll cooperate if the child is present.

My stomach turned.

Forged.

I had never written that.

Another:

If anything goes wrong, clean it completely.

Not mine.

But convincing enough to destroy a frightened woman recovering from brain trauma.

Then we found something else.

A consent form.

Three years old.

Signed:

CAROLINE MERCER.

Statement:

I voluntarily request that Grant Mercer not be informed of my location until independent review establishes whether he presents a threat to Emma or me.

Julian examined it.

“Could be real.”

That hurt differently.

Caroline may truly have chosen silence.

Based on lies.

But chosen.

Then another page.

Request to discontinue no-contact status.

Date:

Two years ago.

Caroline wrote:

I no longer believe Grant ordered the explosion. I want independent contact arranged.

My hands tightened.

“What happened?”

Stamped:

DENIED - MEDICAL SAFETY REVIEW.

By whom?

Dr. Vernon Hale.

Elias Mercer.

And—

someone else.

Daniel Cross?

No.

Name:

OWEN REED.

May you like

Hannah stopped breathing.

Her husband had signed the document that kept Caroline away from me.
