Chapter 14 - THE LAST NIGHT OF THE BLACK KING

My father had given me the pendant on the day I graduated from dental school.

A small gold tooth.

I had worn it every day for eight years.

Now Carmine was telling me it contained evidence of an attempted murder.

I unclasped the chain.

Salvatore examined the pendant.

A tiny seam ran along the back.

With a careful twist, the casing opened.

Inside was a miniature memory card.

I stared at it.

“Dad,” I whispered.

Marco retrieved a secure laptop.

The card contained a single video.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Lena,” he began, “if you're watching this, I couldn't tell you the truth myself.”

I covered my mouth.

He continued.

“Eight years ago, I treated a man named Salvatore Lombardi after a shooting. I discovered that his medical records had been deliberately altered. I also learned that Vincent Hale had threatened a woman and her infant daughter.”

The video shifted.

Security footage appeared.

Vincent stood in a hospital corridor speaking into a phone.

His voice was clear.

“Make sure Salvatore survives. I need him weak, dependent, and suspicious of everyone around him.”

I felt Salvatore go rigid beside me.

Vincent continued.

“Then remove the woman and the child. I'll take control when the time is right.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Salvatore looked at Carmine.

“You knew he wanted my empire.”

Carmine nodded.

“But I didn't know how far he'd go.”

Salvatore closed the laptop.

“No more secrets.”

He turned toward Marco.

“Send copies to the prosecutor and our attorneys. Preserve the original. We do this legally.”

Marco nodded.

“And Vincent?”

Salvatore's eyes darkened.

“We bring Isabella home.”

The rescue began before dawn.

But it wasn't the violent assault everyone expected from the Black King.

Salvatore's attorney contacted state investigators.

A judge authorized emergency action after reviewing the evidence.

Police entered the old harbor hospital with medical personnel.

Vincent tried to leave through a rear corridor.

He was arrested before reaching his car.

And in a locked private room on the third floor, they found Isabella.

Alive.

Thin.

Exhausted.

But alive.

When Salvatore entered with the investigators' permission, she stared at him as though seeing a ghost.

“Sal?”

His voice broke.

“Isabella.”

She began crying.

“I thought you hated me.”

He shook his head.

“I thought you were dead.”

She reached for him.

He held her carefully.

For a moment, eight years disappeared.

Then Isabella whispered, “Where's Sofia?”

“Safe.”

Her eyes filled.

“You found her?”

“Yes.”

She smiled through tears.

“Then it was worth surviving.”

I stood in the doorway, watching a family begin to heal.

I should have felt only happiness.

Instead, something inside me hurt.

Because I had fallen in love with Salvatore Lombardi.

And the woman he had once loved had just returned from the dead.

I turned away before anyone noticed my tears.

But Salvatore saw me.

“Lena.”

I stopped.

He looked from Isabella to me.

May you like

Then he said the words I had been terrified to hear.

“We need to talk.”
