Chapter 7 - THE POLICE WERE NOT THERE FOR THE AFFAIR

Nobody gets arrested for sleeping with a married executive.
At least not where I worked.
So when two Italian officers and a corporate security representative met Trinity outside the aircraft, I knew something else had happened.
Trinity’s face went blank.
“What is this?”
The security representative spoke quietly.
There were questions regarding confidential commercial documents allegedly transmitted across jurisdictions.
No dramatic handcuffs.
No shouting.
Just a request that she accompany them for an interview.
Her attorney had already been contacted.
Trinity turned toward me.
“Ethan.”
I stood frozen.
“What do you want me to do?”
“I don’t know.”
That was the problem with relationships built in hotel rooms.
They rarely come with emergency plans.
Dakota stood near the aircraft door saying goodbye to passengers.
Trinity looked at her.
“You knew?”
Dakota shook her head.
“I knew corporate security would meet someone. I didn’t know who.”
For once, I believed her.
Then Trinity leaned toward me.
“My father has copies of everything.”
“What?”
“The messages. The slide photos. The deal terms.”
“Where?”
She looked toward the officers.
“I sent them to his private server.”
My mouth went dry.
“Why are you telling me now?”
“Because he’s going to say I stole everything without his knowledge.”
She had finally understood.
Robert Vale had protected himself structurally.
No direct emails.
No explicit orders.
Just conversations with his daughter.
Suggestions.
Expectations.
Family pressure.
If the scheme collapsed, Trinity could be framed as an overzealous daughter trying to impress him.
“Can you prove he directed you?”
“I don’t know.”
The officers asked her to move.
Before leaving, she whispered:
“Check the necklace.”
“What?”
Then she was gone.
I had given Trinity a gold necklace four months earlier.
She was wearing it.
So that made no sense.
Until I remembered another necklace.
The one she kept in the Florence luggage case.
A vintage pendant she once claimed belonged to her mother.
Her suitcase had been removed with other premium luggage.
Corporate security controlled it now.
I couldn’t access it.
Maybe that was good.
Then a man in a navy suit approached me.
“Mr. Coleman?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Luca Ferri, European counsel for Caldwell Meridian.”
Of course.
Everyone had prepared for my arrival except me.
He handed me a sealed folder.
“Your corporate devices are subject to preservation protocol. Please surrender the company phone and laptop.”
I did.
Then another man stepped forward.
American.
Gray suit.
A face I recognized from two holiday parties.
Dakota’s attorney.
Michael Grant.
He handed me an envelope.
“Ethan Coleman?”
“Yes.”
“You’ve been served.”
There they were.
Divorce papers.
At the Florence airport.
While my wife was still aboard the aircraft I had used to take my mistress to Italy.
I almost laughed.
Michael’s expression remained neutral.
“Mrs. Coleman is requesting temporary exclusive use of the marital residence.”
My head snapped up.
“What?”
“She has already relocated.”
“Where?”
“I’m not authorized to tell you.”
I stared toward Flight 912.
Dakota was visible through the jet bridge.
She wasn’t going home to our house.
Then Michael added:
“She removed only her personal belongings.”
“What about mine?”
“Still there.”
“So I can go home?”
“Eventually.”
He hesitated.
“However, your company informed us they may need access to certain home-office records first.”
My humiliation found a new depth.
Then my personal phone buzzed.
My sister.
ETHAN, CALL ME. MOM JUST FOUND OUT.
I closed my eyes.
Affair.
Corporate investigation.
Divorce.
Family.
All before breakfast.
Then Luca Ferri stepped closer.
“There is another issue.”
“What?”
“Bellarosa’s sellers terminated exclusivity this morning.”
My career flashed before my eyes.
“Because of me?”
“Partly.”
He handed me the notice.
The sellers alleged Caldwell Meridian negotiated using compromised information.
But there was something else.
One confidential appendix had been altered before submission.
A financial projection.
The modified version made Bellarosa appear more profitable than it was.

The document had been uploaded under my credentials.
And I had never seen it before.
