Chapter 9 - MY MOTHER’S LAST CONVERSATION WAS WITH LUCA

Luca went completely still when I showed him Laura’s message.

“You saw my mother three days before she died.”

“Yes.”

“You told me she sent you to check on my bakery.”

“Yes.”

“You failed to mention the part where she visited you while dying.”

His jaw tightened.

“I promised her.”

Of course.

I wanted to scream.

Instead:

“Tell me now.”

Nine years earlier, Anna Bennett arrived at Moretti estate in a wheelchair.

Cancer advanced.

Vittorio allowed private meeting with Luca because Anna asked.

Why Luca?

Not Matteo.

Not Elena.

Because Anna believed Luca was the one person Vittorio loved but could not completely control.

She told him truth.

Matteo was Thomas’s son.

Elena was hers.

Sophia knew nothing.

Lake Como land belonged to all three.

Then she asked Luca for one thing:

“If your father ever tries to use Sophia to consolidate this family, give her a way out.”

That was why Luca kept telling me I could leave.

Not only rejection trauma.

A promise.

My anger softened against my will.

“You remembered.”

“Every word.”

Then why not tell me immediately?

Because Anna said only if Vittorio moved against me.

Luca did not realize marriage itself was that move until now.

He thought Dad’s debt arrangement was separate.

Then Anna gave him sealed envelope.

For me.

Where?

He had kept it in personal safe nine years.

Never opened.

He brought it.

My mother’s handwriting.

Sophia,

If Luca gives you this, then I was right to trust him.

My vision blurred.

Then:

Do not confuse kindness with safety. A kind man can still belong to a dangerous system.

I looked at Luca.

He accepted without offense.

Then:

And do not marry anyone because our family needs saving. We have spent too many generations treating daughters like bridges between men.

That line nearly broke me.

Then:

If you choose Luca after knowing him, let it be the first Moretti-Bennett agreement nobody else wrote.

I laughed through tears.

My mother was matchmaking from grave while insisting she wasn’t.

Then final pages.

Truth about land.

Siblings.

My father’s fear.

Vittorio.

And Anna’s last Italian trip.

She came not only to see Luca.

She met Paolo Serrano.

Why?

Paolo had proof Vittorio altered trust documents.

Anna planned to expose him.

Then Paolo demanded money.

Blackmail.

Anna refused.

Three days later, she returned Boston and died from cancer as expected.

No murder.

But Paolo stole copies of DNA and will before she left.

That explained his later ability.

He had spent nine years selling secrets to whoever paid.

Matteo boat sabotage?

Probably he engineered for a party.

Who?

Need identify.

Laura arrived in Italy with recipe safe contents.

DNA records intact.

She had duplicates.

Good.

Then forensic money trail finally traced Moro Foundation payments beyond Paolo.

Recipient beneficial entity:

CASTELLO ADVISORY.

Owner:

Bianca Rossi.

Bride number three.

The woman paid to reject Luca.

She was not merely a bride.

She had been hired by Paolo.

Purpose:

Gather information from Moretti estate.

By who?

Her father, Senator? Maybe rival business.

But Bianca later discovered Matteo alive? We need link.

She admitted on video interview.

Paolo paid her to enter estate and find trust documents.

She found more.

Then Vittorio paid her to leave.

She took both.

Very pragmatic.

Then years later Paolo asked her company to route payment to Carlo for “security operation.”

She claimed she thought surveillance, not sabotage.

Maybe.

Then who funded Castello?

A trust:

A.B. FOUNDATION.

Anna Bennett?

No.

Created in her name after death.

Another forged dead identity.

Beneficiary:

Thomas Bennett.

Dad again.

But he didn’t know.

Who controlled?

Laura Finch.

My mother’s investigator/accountant.

Oh no.

Laura went pale.

She admitted.

Anna created foundation legitimately before death to fund protection for her children.

Laura trustee.

She approved money to Bianca.

Why?

She hired Bianca to investigate Matteo’s disappearance.

Then Bianca routed to Paolo without Laura knowing?

Funds reclassified.

Maybe Paolo deceived.

Again layers.

Laura’s actions contributed indirectly.

Then Luca said:

“Everyone in this story hired someone to protect someone else until nobody knew who was being protected.”

Exactly.

Then Matteo looked at me.

“We should end it.”

How?

Transparency.

They agreed to bring full documents to independent Italian/U.S. counsel, courts.

No more secret trusts.

No more private enforcement.

Vittorio reluctantly agreed from wherever he hid? He returned eventually, weak.

Paolo arrested on financial fraud and connected sabotage investigation.

Carlo caught.

Alessandro cooperated, faced professional consequences.

Bennett land restored to equal trust for Sophia, Matteo, Elena pending validation.

Moretti succession restructured.

Luca refused sole power.

Independent board.

Matteo legal recognition.

Elena stake.

Vittorio resigned.

That is payoff.

Then Sophia returns Boston? Before Chapter 10 perhaps months later.

Luca doesn’t pressure.

She does bakery.

They communicate.

He visits.

He is absurdly large in tiny bakery.

Romance grows.

Then open ending bigger family mystery.
