Chapter 4 - THE FLIGHT HE BOOKED FOR MY BABY

For several seconds, I could not understand what I was seeing.
NOAH CARTER.
Infant.
Ticketed passenger.
Zurich.
Three days away.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why is our son on this reservation?”
His face went pale.
“It wasn’t final.”
“Why?”
“Sophie, listen.”
“No.”
My voice shook for the first time.
“Why is my five-week-old baby booked on an international flight with you, Rachel, and her daughter?”
Daniel raised both hands.
“We were never leaving without you.”
“My name isn’t here.”
“You were supposed to be added.”
“Then why wasn’t I?”
Silence.
Noah slept against my chest.
The idea of Daniel taking him anywhere without my knowledge turned my fear into something clean and sharp.
“Was this for medical treatment?”
“No.”
“Business?”
“Partly.”
“What business?”
He hesitated.
“Private banking meetings.”
Zurich.
Of course.
HCT.
Offshore accounts.
Benefits.
Insurance.
This was no longer only an affair.
“Was Noah going to be used for paperwork?”
“No.”
Too fast.
“Then explain.”
Daniel sat.
He looked suddenly older.
“HCT is part of an executive deferred-compensation structure.”
“You told me it wasn’t yours.”
“It isn’t mine alone.”
“Who else?”
He stayed silent.
I called Claire.
Right there.
Daniel swore.
I put her on speaker.
“Claire, Daniel booked Noah on a flight to Zurich this Saturday without telling me.”
Silence.
Then:
“Do you have the itinerary?”
“Yes.”
“Photograph it.”
I did.
“Do not give Daniel the passport.”
I tightened my hand around it.
Daniel snapped:
“This is insane.”
Claire answered calmly:
“Mr. Carter, do you have written authorization from Sophie to travel internationally with the infant?”
“No.”
“Then I recommend you stop speaking.”
Daniel stared at my phone.
He knew Claire.
That helped.
I photographed everything.
The reservations.
Passports.
Folder.
Then I left.
At my sister Olivia’s condo, I barely slept.
At 2:12 a.m., Claire sent a message:
EMERGENCY REVIEW COMPLETE. CALL WHEN AWAKE.
I called immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
“What did you find?”
“The Zurich trip is connected to a bank called Helvetic Crown.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does HCT have there?”
“Accounts.”
“How much?”
“Unknown.”
“Why Noah?”
Claire paused.
“Because one draft trust document names him.”
I closed my eyes.
“What trust?”
“The Carter Family Opportunity Trust.”
Never heard of it.
“Grantor?”
“HCT Strategic Services.”
“Beneficiaries?”
“Daniel Carter. Rachel Morgan. Lily Morgan.”
Pause.
“And Noah.”
I felt cold.
“Me?”
“No.”
There it was.
A family trust without the wife.
Daniel.
His mistress.
Her daughter.
My baby.
I whispered:
“What was he planning?”
Claire answered:
“We don’t know yet.”
Then:
“But Sophie, the townhouse title is scheduled to transfer into that trust after the Zurich meeting.”
Everything connected.
The townhouse was not simply a gift to Rachel.
It was an asset inside a planned family structure.
May you like
A family that included my newborn son.
And excluded me.
