Chapter 12 - The Heiress Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The answer was hidden in a document signed twenty-four years earlier.
Adrian's mother had inherited a controlling interest in several medical investment companies from her own father.
Years later, Charles Sterling had allegedly used forged agreements to seize operational control.
Adrian's father discovered the fraud.
But Sterling threatened his wife and children.
Instead of exposing him, he buried the evidence.
And eventually, he told Adrian that his mother was dead.
I couldn't imagine the heartbreak.
For eighteen years, Adrian had mourned someone who might have been trying to protect him.
"Isabella found the original ownership documents," Marcus explained.
Adrian stared at him.
"Then Sterling kidnapped her to prevent her from revealing the fraud."
Marcus nodded.
"And your mother has been trying to get those documents back."
I looked toward Adrian.
"What happens if the truth comes out?"
"Sterling loses control of the companies," he said. "And investigators gain evidence of decades of fraud."
"Then why does he want me?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Because your father left one final piece of evidence."
I felt sick.
"What?"
"A sealed deposition. Benjamin recorded testimony before his death, but he arranged for the complete file to be released only to his children."
I stared.
"Me and Ethan?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't anyone tell us?"
"Because the attorney holding the files disappeared."
Adrian's expression sharpened.
"Where is the attorney now?"
Marcus slowly smiled.
"Working under another name."
I frowned.
"Who?"
The office door opened.
Evelyn stepped inside.
Adrian's assistant.
The woman who had welcomed me into the building.
The woman who always seemed to know everything.
She looked at me.
"Hello, Mara."
I stared.
"You're the attorney?"
She nodded.
"My legal name is Evelyn Bellamy."
My heart stopped.
"Bellamy?"
She smiled sadly.
"Benjamin was my older brother."
I could barely breathe.
"My father had a sister?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you ever come find us?"
Her eyes filled.
"Because Sterling was watching your family. And because Benjamin made me promise to protect you from a distance."
I stared at her.
All those years of struggling.
All those years of believing we were alone.
"You knew about us?"
"Every birthday."
My eyes burned.
"Every Christmas?"
She nodded.
"I wanted to come. More than anything."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because the last time someone tried to contact you, Sterling found them."
Silence filled the room.
Then Evelyn reached into her briefcase.
She removed a small sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In my father's handwriting.
I began crying before I even opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My beautiful Mara,
If you're reading this, then you are old enough to understand that courage isn't the absence of fear.
It's choosing to protect people even when you're terrified.
Take care of Ethan.
But don't forget to let someone take care of you.
I couldn't read the rest.
Adrian wrapped his arms around me.
And I cried against his chest.
After a while, Evelyn spoke.
"There's something else."
I looked up.
"What?"
"Benjamin didn't just leave evidence."
She placed another document on the desk.
It was a deed.
A property deed.
Registered in my name.
A large waterfront estate outside Chicago.
I stared.
"What is this?"
Evelyn smiled through tears.
"Your father left you something Sterling has been trying to find for fourteen years."
Adrian examined the document.
Then froze.
The property wasn't just a house.
May you like
It contained a sealed underground archive.
And according to Evelyn, inside that archive was enough evidence to bring Charles Sterling's entire organization down.
