Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE OF SECRETS

I had spent twenty-six years learning how to survive fear.
But nothing prepared me for the fear of losing Chloe.
Not bullets.
Not betrayal.
Not my father's empire.
Not prison.
Not death.
None of it.
Because all those things threatened me.
Chloe was different.
She was innocent.
And someone had taken her because they knew exactly where to hurt me.
I called Elena.
She answered on the first ring.
“Vincent?”
“Chloe is gone.”
Silence.
“What?”
“They took her.”
“Who?”
“Marcus.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“No.”
“I saw him.”
“Where are you?”
“Union Station.”
“Stay there.”
“I can't.”
“Vincent—”
“They want me at the estate.”
“Then don't go.”
“They have Chloe.”
“And that's why you can't walk into their trap.”
I looked at Evelyn.
She was staring at the tracks.
“We need to find her.”
“I'll call Mercer.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if Marcus is involved, we don't know who else is compromised.”
Elena went quiet.
Then she said:
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“I'm coming.”
“Elena—”
“You made me promise to protect Chloe once.”
Her voice broke.
“Now let me keep that promise.”
I closed my eyes.
“Okay.”
Two hours later, we stood outside the Thorne estate.
Snow covered the driveway.
Every window was dark.
The house looked abandoned.
But I knew better.
“Stay behind me,” I said.
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
“This is my family too.”
She walked forward.
The front door opened before we reached it.
Marcus stood inside.
No weapon.
No guards.
Just Marcus.
He looked exhausted.
“Come in.”
I stared at him.
“You took Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“If you've hurt her—”
“I haven't.”
“Then why?”
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Because your father is still alive.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You don't.”
He stepped aside.
We entered.
The old mansion smelled exactly as I remembered.
Cedar.
Smoke.
My mother's perfume.
For one second, I was six years old again.
Marcus closed the door.
“Your father didn't surrender.”
I stared at him.
“He's in federal custody.”
“That's what everyone believes.”
“Where is he?”
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
“Below.”
My blood froze.
“Below what?”
“The house.”
Evelyn whispered:
“The second vault.”
Marcus nodded.
“The real one.”
We followed him downstairs.
A hidden elevator opened beneath the library.
We descended.
The doors opened into a massive underground chamber.
And there, sitting at a table, was my father.
His hands weren't cuffed.
He wore a dark suit.
He looked older.
But not defeated.
Chloe sat beside him.
Her hands were free.
The moment she saw me, she jumped from the chair.
“Mr. Vincent!”
I ran to her.
I dropped to my knees.
She threw her arms around my neck.
I held her so tightly she laughed.
“You're squeezing me.”
“I know.”
“You're crying.”
“I know.”
She touched my face.
“Don't be sad.”
I closed my eyes.
“I thought I'd lost you.”
“You didn't.”
I pulled back.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“He gave me cookies.”
I looked at my father.
He smiled.
“Children shouldn't be frightened unnecessarily.”
I stood.
My rage returned.
“You don't get to talk about children.”
My father looked at Evelyn.
Then back at me.
“You brought her.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You lied.”
He smiled.
“I protected you.”
“You erased me.”
“I saved you.”
“You stole my life.”
“I gave you one.”
She shook with anger.
“You gave me nothing.”
My father sighed.
“That's what children always believe.”
I stepped between them.
“You're done.”
He looked at me.
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
“You burned the ledger.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed the visible empire.”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“And yet you're standing inside the heart of it.”
I looked around.
Servers.
Documents.
Money.
Weapons.
Photographs.
Everything.
My father leaned back.
“You wanted freedom.”
“I have it.”
“No.”
He pointed toward Chloe.
“You have responsibility.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you inherited something greater than money.”
He pushed a folder across the table.
I opened it.
Inside were birth certificates.
Property records.
Trust documents.
Bank accounts.
Then one page made my blood run cold.
A document titled:
THORNE SUCCESSION PROTOCOL
I read the first line.
Upon the death, disappearance, or imprisonment of the patriarch, control of the secondary organization shall transfer to the surviving blood heir.
I looked at my father.
“What is this?”
“You.”
“No.”
“You are the heir.”
“I destroyed the empire.”
“You destroyed one.”
He pointed toward the folder.
“The other is waiting.”
I closed it.
“I don't want it.”
He smiled.
“You don't get to choose.”
“I already did.”
I turned to leave.
My father spoke.
“Then ask Dominic.”
I stopped.
“What about him?”
“Ask him who your sister's real father was.”
Evelyn went pale.
I looked at her.
She shook her head.
“Don't.”
But it was too late.
The door behind us opened.
Dominic entered.
He looked older than the man I remembered.
Tired.
Broken.
But alive.
He saw Evelyn.
His face collapsed.
“Evelyn.”
She stared at him.
“Dad?”
The room went silent.
Dominic looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.”
I stepped toward him.
“You're her father?”
He nodded.
“For thirty years.”
I couldn't speak.
Dominic's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought she was dead.”
Evelyn walked toward him.
He opened his arms.
She hesitated.
Then she stepped into them.
For the first time, I saw something my family had almost forgotten how to create.
A reunion.
No money.
No power.
No fear.
Just a father holding the daughter he had lost.
I looked at my own father.
He watched them without emotion.
“You see?” he said.
“What?”
“Family always comes back.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at Chloe.
“Not family.”
Then I looked at him.
“Love.”
His smile disappeared.
Suddenly, every light in the vault went out.
A red emergency light flashed.
An alarm began screaming.
Marcus grabbed his weapon.
“What happened?”
A voice came through the speakers.
“Security breach.”
My father stood.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.
“Impossible.”
The speakers crackled.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
“Hello, Father.”
Evelyn froze.
I looked at her.
She whispered:
“That's not me.”
The voice continued.
“You thought you buried me.”
My father stepped backward.
“No.”
The voice laughed.
“You forgot one thing.”
The screen in the vault turned on.
A woman appeared.
Older than Evelyn.
Maybe forty.
Emerald eyes.
The same eyes.
She smiled.
“I wasn't the missing heir.”
My father whispered:
“Impossible.”
The woman leaned closer to the camera.
“I was the first.”
The screen went black.
A second later, every door in the vault locked.
Marcus looked at me.
“We're trapped.”
Then Chloe grabbed my hand.
“Mr. Vincent?”
I looked down.
“What?”
She pointed toward the floor.
“There's someone underneath us.”
A faint knocking echoed through the vault.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Three knocks.
My father's face turned white.
He whispered:
“No.”
I stared at him.
“What is it?”
He didn't answer.
The knocking came again.
Three times.
Evelyn stepped backward.
“Dad?”
My father finally spoke.
“The first heir.”
The floor beneath us shifted.
A hidden panel opened.
And from the darkness below, a woman's hand slowly reached upward.
I pulled Chloe behind me.
Dominic raised his weapon.
Evelyn stared into the opening.
Then a woman climbed out.
She looked directly at me.
Her emerald eyes were filled with tears.
“Vincent.”
I couldn't move.
She smiled.
“I'm sorry I'm late.”
Behind her, the vault doors began unlocking one by one.
And somewhere above us, sirens started screaming.
My father whispered one final word.
“Run.”
I had never heard fear in my father's voice before.
Not until that moment.
And for the first time, I understood something terrifying.
The Thorne empire hadn't been destroyed.
May you like
We had only opened its grave.
And something had just climbed out.
