Chapter 11 - THE CHILD ELENA HID

Rosa’s letters mentioned no second child.

At first.

Then Norah noticed one recipe page.

Small handwriting in the margin:

For Sofia, no cinnamon.

Gabriel stared.

“Sofia.”

A name.

No surname.

No date.

Then another note:

Sofia likes carrots cut thin.

Another:

Gabriel liked bread crusts. Sofia hates them.

His mother had written about both children.

Gabriel sat very still.

“How old?”

If Elena was pregnant during the fire, Sofia would be twenty-three now.

Norah was twenty-four.

They looked at each other.

No.

Too obvious.

No DNA twist.

The dates did not match anyway.

Norah had birth records.

Different mother.

Different year.

Good.

Then Leo found an old photograph inside Rosa’s sewing cabinet.

Elena holding a baby.

On back:

SOFIA ELENA RUSSO

AGE 4 MONTHS

Russo.

Maybe adoptive family.

They searched public records legally through investigator.

Sofia Russo.

Born in Wisconsin.

Adopted by Mark and Evelyn Russo.

Current occupation:

Elementary school music teacher.

Living in Madison.

No criminal record.

No apparent connection to Hayes.

Gabriel did not rush there.

That surprised Norah.

“I thought you’d send six SUVs.”

“I’m learning.”

“Painfully?”

He almost smiled.

They contacted Sofia through attorney.

Asked whether she would speak with a man claiming family connection.

Sofia refused.

Fair.

Then she sent one message:

I know who Gabriel Hayes is. I want no part of that world.

Gabriel read it.

Said nothing.

That hurt more than anger.

Norah said:

“She doesn’t know you.”

“She knows enough.”

“No. She knows the name.”

He looked at her.

“Sometimes that is enough.”

Maybe.

Then another message came.

From Sofia.

Rosa told me about you.

Gabriel stopped breathing.

So Rosa had maintained contact.

Sofia knew.

She chose distance.

Why?

Next:

She said you became like Michael.

That cut deep.

Norah watched him.

He deserved some of it.

Not all.

Then:

She also said people can change after they get tired of being afraid.

Rosa again.

Leaving doors open.

Sofia agreed to a phone call.

No meeting.

Gabriel accepted.

They spoke privately.

Norah stayed outside.

Forty minutes.

When he emerged, his eyes were red.

“She has two kids.”

Norah smiled.

“You’re an uncle.”

“I don’t know if she wants that.”

Good answer.

Then:

“She said Rosa came every Christmas.”

Gabriel looked devastated.

“I had family forty minutes away for twenty-three years.”

“And they were afraid.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

That was becoming his hardest lesson.

Then Sofia told him something Rosa never put in notebook.

Elena’s final wish.

Gabriel should never inherit Michael’s violence just because he inherited Michael’s companies.

Sofia had built a normal life on purpose.

Rosa helped protect it.

Gabriel looked out the hospital window.

“What if I don’t know how to do normal?”

Norah leaned against the wall.

“You learn.”

“From who?”

“Literally everyone outside your penthouse.”

He laughed.

Then:

“Will you teach me?”

Dangerous question.

Norah’s expression changed.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Why?”

“I’m not becoming your rehabilitation project manager.”

Fair.

“You need therapy.”

He looked offended.

“Actual therapy?”

“Yes.”

“You’re cruel.”

“Frequently.”

Then he smiled.

“Dinner?”

Norah stared.

“You are hospitalized because you nearly starved yourself.”

“Eventually.”

“Ask me when you can eat a sandwich without armed witnesses.”

“Challenge accepted.”

Then Leo entered.

“The prosecutor wants to speak.”

Rafael was cooperating.

Predictably.

He offered evidence against others.

Including Vincent.

Including several current capos.

Gabriel had decisions to make.

Protect organization?

Or expose rot.

Then Leo added:

“Rafael says Paulie wasn’t the first person he targeted.”

Gabriel’s face hardened.

“Who?”

Leo looked at Norah.

“Rosa.”

Not murder.

Something else.

Rafael had been the reason Rosa lost contact with Gabriel’s sister.

May you like

He intercepted their final messages too.

He had spent years isolating every person who might expose him.
