Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO BETRAYED THE MORETTI FAMILY

Vincent Romano had been part of Dante Moretti's life since childhood.

He'd attended his father's funeral.

Helped him take control of the family organization.

And stood beside him when Luca died.

Now Mateo had found documents suggesting Vincent ordered the attack that killed Dante's brother.

I watched Dante read the report.

He didn't speak.

His face slowly lost all color.

"Vincent?"

Mateo nodded.

"The file contains payment authorizations and messages from the days before Luca died."

Dante looked toward the window.

For years, he'd believed Luca was killed by a rival organization.

He'd spent years chasing enemies who may never have been responsible.

Now the evidence pointed toward the man sitting beside him at every important meeting.

My stomach tightened.

"What happens now?"

Dante looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the dangerous man everyone feared.

Then something changed.

He took a slow breath.

"We preserve the evidence."

I nodded.

"And?"

"We cooperate with investigators."

I stared.

The old Dante would've handled betrayal privately.

With threats.

With men who made people disappear.

But he was changing.

Not because he had become weak.

Because he'd finally understood how much damage secrecy and fear had done to his family.

The independent review continued.

Mateo's copied records were authenticated through forensic procedures.

The financial trail linked companies controlled by Vincent Romano to payments made shortly before Luca's death.

The records also showed contacts with the security contractors involved in the docks shooting.

Dante's attorney contacted the appropriate authorities.

Meanwhile, Celeste's access to the penthouse and family financial systems was suspended pending review.

She contested the allegations.

Arthur Bowmont denied wrongdoing.

And Vincent Romano refused to answer questions without counsel.

The process would take time.

But the conspiracy was beginning to unravel.

Then something unexpected happened.

Valentina returned home.

Her doctors had reviewed her medications and stabilized her treatment.

She looked tired.

But her eyes were clear.

When she entered the penthouse, she immediately asked for pepper soup.

I almost cried.

I made it myself.

When she tasted the first spoonful, she smiled.

"Serena, this is what home should taste like."

My throat tightened.

Then she reached for Dante's hand.

"My son."

He sat beside her.

"Yes, Mama?"

She studied him.

"You know about Vincent."

Dante nodded.

"I do."

Her eyes filled.

"I tried to tell you."

His voice broke.

"I know."

She looked down.

"Luca wanted me to wait until we had proof."

Dante covered his face.

For years, he'd believed his mother was simply grieving.

Now he understood she'd been trying to protect him from a betrayal she couldn't prove.

Valentina squeezed his hand.

"Your brother loved you."

Dante began crying.

I looked away.

Some moments belonged to family.

Then Valentina turned toward me.

"Serena."

I smiled.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"Come here."

I stepped closer.

She reached into her handbag.

Then placed a small silver necklace in my palm.

A delicate rose pendant.

I stared.

"What's this?"

Valentina smiled through tears.

"It belonged to Luca's mother."

I frowned.

"But you're his mother."

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she looked frightened.

Then she whispered:

"Serena, there's something Dante doesn't know about Luca."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

She looked toward her son.

Then said the words that shattered everything.

"Luca wasn't born a Moretti."

Dante went completely still.

His mother continued.

May you like

"He was adopted."

And the family who gave him up carried the surname Cruz.
