Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT VINCENT CHOSE JUSTICE

Vincent Calder had spent most of his adult life believing power meant never allowing anyone to challenge him.

Now he stood beside me outside an interview room, watching a woman confess that she'd helped conceal the circumstances of my mother's death.

And he did something I never expected.

He cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

A single tear slipped down his cheek.

I stared at him.

"Vincent?"

He turned away.

"I'm sorry."

I swallowed.

"For what?"

"For hiring you and keeping the past from you. For allowing Nathan to remain in my organization. For failing to ask questions when the answers became uncomfortable."

I shook my head.

"You didn't know everything."

"No."

He looked at me.

"But I knew enough to investigate sooner."

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I'd been afraid to say aloud.

"Are you going to protect your cousin?"

Vincent's expression hardened.

"No."

"Even if it destroys your family's reputation?"

"Especially then."

I studied him.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

But somehow more human than the man I'd feared for three years.

"What happens now?"

"The investigators build their case. I give them every record they need."

I nodded.

"And the illegal businesses?"

He took a long breath.

"They'll be shut down. The legitimate companies will be reviewed independently. I'll accept whatever consequences follow from my own decisions."

I stared.

For Vincent Calder, that wasn't a small promise.

His entire identity had been built around control.

Now he was willingly surrendering pieces of it.

Not because I asked.

But because he'd finally understood what his family's secrets had cost.

Nathan was arrested two days later at a private airfield.

Everett was taken into custody after investigators established his involvement in the poisoning attempt and the confrontation with my mother.

Caroline faced charges connected to falsifying records and concealing evidence.

All three retained attorneys.

Their cases would move through the legal system.

But for the first time, the evidence was no longer hidden.

Then Vincent called me with unexpected news.

"Aaron's awake."

My heart lifted.

"Really?"

"He's asking for you."

I visited him that afternoon.

He looked pale.

Thin.

But alive.

When I entered, he smiled weakly.

"Well, if it isn't my favorite pastry chef."

I laughed through tears.

"You're impossible."

"So I've been told."

I sat beside his bed.

"I'm sorry."

He frowned.

"For what?"

"For not stopping you sooner."

Aaron shook his head.

"Lena, you tried to save me before you even knew who was responsible."

Tears filled my eyes.

He reached for my hand.

"You gave me a fighting chance."

I smiled.

Then he looked toward the door.

"There's something I need to tell you."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

Aaron lowered his voice.

"Before dinner, Nathan asked me whether I would taste Vincent's food under any circumstances."

I stared.

"What did you say?"

"I told him it was my job."

Aaron swallowed.

"Then he smiled."

A chill moved through me.

"He said that was exactly what he needed to hear."

I covered my mouth.

Aaron looked at me.

"Lena, Nathan wasn't only trying to kill Vincent."

I stared.

"What?"

"He knew Vincent would make me taste the food if you objected."

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Aaron whispered:

"He planned for one of us to die, no matter what you did."
