Chapter 13 - THE FAMILY GENE VIEVE BUILT IN SECRET

Elena refused to enter the twins’ room.
“I can’t.”
Lawson stood beside her.
“You walked into this house when everyone else had given up.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
“I thought I was helping Genevieve’s children.”
“You are.”
She looked at him.
“You heard the video.”
“Yes.”
“They’re biologically mine.”
“Yes.”
“And Genevieve never told me.”
“No.”
Pain moved across Elena’s face.
“That was wrong.”
Lawson surprised himself by saying it.
He loved Genevieve.
He could still admit she had been wrong.
“She should have told you.”
Elena began crying.
“But she was still their mother.”
“Yes.”
That answer came without hesitation.
Biology did not erase six years of bedtime stories, birthday cakes, fevers, songs, scraped knees, and love.
Genevieve was their mother.
Elena was something else.
Something complicated.
Something that did not need a name today.
Amelia approached.
“I’m their half-sister.”
Elena laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
“This family needs a diagram.”
Lawson almost smiled.
Then Jonah called from the room.
“Elena?”
She froze.
“Come here.”
She entered.
Blythe looked at her.
“Daddy says you’re family.”
Elena sat between the beds.
“He says too much.”
Jonah whispered:
“Can you stay anyway?”
That broke her.
She nodded.
“As long as you want.”
The transplant began the next morning.
Amelia donated.
The process was brutal but controlled.
The twins developed fevers.
Blythe became dangerously unstable on day two.
Jonah’s blood pressure crashed on day three.
Lawson lived beside their beds.
Elena slept in a chair.
Amelia refused to leave the floor.
Prescott guarded the hall personally.
Victor remained missing.
Then, on the fourth morning, Jonah’s counts changed.
Slightly.
Amelia stared at the screen.
“What?”
Lawson stood.
She smiled.
“Engraftment signs.”
Elena covered her face.
Blythe’s numbers followed twelve hours later.
Not victory.
Not yet.
But life had begun fighting back.
That evening, Prescott entered.
“We found Victor.”
Lawson did not ask where.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Custody?”
“Yes.”
Lawson looked at the twins.
He felt no urge to leave.
That surprised him.
Once, he would have needed to see Victor broken.
Now he wanted to see Blythe open her eyes.
Prescott smiled faintly.
“You’re changing.”
“Don’t get sentimental.”
Then Amelia entered holding another recovered Genevieve document.
“There’s one more legal issue.”
Lawson groaned.
“What now?”
Genevieve had created a sealed trust.
Not for the twins.
For Elena.
Inside it was ownership of eleven percent of Mercer Biomedical.
Enough to make Elena one of the company’s largest individual shareholders.

And Genevieve’s instructions were simple:
SHE GETS A SEAT AT THE TABLE WHETHER LAWSON LIKES IT OR NOT.
