Chapter 11 - THE FATHER NOBODY SPOKE ABOUT

Benjamin lowered the phone.

Charles had disconnected.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Laura whispered, "He's lying."

Benjamin looked at her.

"What truth about my father?"

Laura sat slowly.

Her face had gone pale.

"Your father wasn't a criminal."

I looked toward Rebecca.

She remained silent.

Laura continued.

"His name was Thomas Bennett. He worked as an engineer with my father."

Annie frowned.

"Grandpa Henry?"

Laura nodded.

"Thomas was one of his apprentices."

Benjamin looked confused.

"What happened to him?"

Laura took a breath.

"He disappeared after your grandfather's accident."

I felt a chill.

Another disappearance.

Another person connected to the factory.

"Did Charles know Thomas?" I asked.

Laura nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why would he steal Benjamin?"

Laura looked down.

"Because Thomas discovered what Charles was doing."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"What exactly?"

"Charles had been secretly transferring patent rights into companies he controlled."

I stared.

"The same patents Henry helped develop?"

"Yes."

Laura's voice trembled.

"Thomas found the original ownership records. He threatened to report the fraud."

Benjamin covered his face.

"And Charles took me?"

Laura began crying.

"I believe he used the chaos after Thomas disappeared to obtain custody through false documents."

I felt sick.

Charles hadn't simply stolen money.

He had stolen a child.

He had built a family around a lie.

And Benjamin had spent nineteen years believing that lie.

"Where is Thomas now?" Annie asked.

Laura shook her head.

"I don't know."

Rebecca looked toward me.

"We need to find out what happened to him."

I nodded.

But my mind kept returning to Daniel.

My trusted right-hand man had known about Henry's warning.

He had known about the factory.

He had signed financial accounts connected to Patricia.

And he'd worked with Charles for years.

Was he another victim?

Or had he helped conceal everything?

That afternoon, Daniel requested a meeting through his attorney.

Investigators permitted Rebecca to review a statement he had voluntarily provided.

It contained information about the night Henry Carter was injured.

Daniel admitted he had been present.

He'd seen Patricia arguing with Thomas Bennett near the testing room.

Then he heard a loud mechanical failure.

When he arrived, Henry was trapped beneath the machine.

Thomas was trying to help him.

Patricia was nowhere to be found.

Daniel claimed Victor Graves arrived minutes later.

My father ordered emergency services called immediately.

Then he discovered the maintenance records had been altered.

Daniel's statement continued.

Victor confronted Charles about the suspicious documents.

Charles threatened to expose the Graves family's illegal operations if Victor contacted the police.

I stared at the report.

My father had been blackmailed.

For years.

By his own brother.

Then Rebecca handed me another document.

A handwritten letter from Victor.

Dated three months before his death.

Nathan,

If you ever discover what happened to Henry Carter, understand that my greatest failure was remaining silent.

I thought I could protect this family by keeping Charles close.

Instead, I allowed him to destroy another family.

The words blurred.

For nine years, I'd believed my father was incapable of admitting mistakes.

Now I was reading an apology he had never found the courage to give me.

But the final paragraph changed everything.

Thomas Bennett is alive.

I froze.

Then I read the next sentence.

Charles has been keeping him hidden because Thomas knows where the original patent records are stored.
