Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT WE CHANGED THE RULES

:
For three full seconds, nobody in the ballroom breathed.
Then Seraphina's crystal champagne flute hit the marble floor.
The crack echoed beneath the chandeliers.
Dozens of conversations died instantly.
Blake stared at me.
Not at my dress.
Not at the necklace he had given me on our fifth anniversary.
Not even at Damien.
He stared at Damien's hand wrapped securely around mine.
“Audrey,” he said.
My name sounded less like a greeting and more like an accusation.
I smiled.
“Good evening, Blake.”
His jaw tightened.
“You know him?”
Damien answered before I could.
“Yes.”
Blake's eyes narrowed.
“How?”
Damien leaned slightly closer to me.
“He's married to Seraphina.”
Blake looked at him.
Then at Seraphina.
Then at me.
The color drained from his face.
I had imagined this moment a hundred times.
I had imagined screaming.
Throwing wine.
Slapping him.
Instead, I felt strangely calm.
Three weeks of collecting evidence had changed me.
The woman who had discovered the affair had been devastated.
The woman standing in that ballroom had become strategic.
Seraphina moved toward us.
“Audrey…”
I raised my champagne glass.
“Please don't.”
She stopped.
“You don't understand.”
“Oh, I understand perfectly.”
I reached into my evening bag and removed a small black envelope.
I handed it to her.
Inside was a photograph.
Blake and Seraphina entering a luxury hotel in Manhattan.
A second photograph.
Damien and Seraphina leaving a private airport lounge together.
Seraphina's fingers began shaking.
She looked at Damien.
“Why would you—”
“Because your husband deserved the truth,” he said.
Her eyes widened.
“Damien, listen to me.”
“No.”
He spoke softly.
“No more lies.”
Blake stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.”
I laughed.
“Funny.”
He stopped.
“You didn't think it was private when you charged hotel suites to my company's corporate card.”
A murmur moved through the room.
Several executives looked toward Blake.
His promotion committee was standing only twenty feet away.
Damien's expression remained controlled.
“There's more,” he said.
I looked at him.
He nodded toward the projection screen above the ballroom.
The screen suddenly went black.
Then a spreadsheet appeared.
Transaction records.
Expense reports.
Wire transfers.
Shell companies.
The title at the top read:
AEROSPACE DYNAMICS — INTERNAL AUDIT REVIEW.
The room erupted.
Blake lunged toward the control booth.
“Shut that down!”
Too late.
The next page appeared.
A list of transfers.
Millions of dollars routed through consulting firms that did not exist.
All signed by Blake.
Then another name appeared.
Seraphina Sterling.
Consulting Director.
I looked at Damien.
“This isn't just an affair.”
“No,” he said.
“It never was.”
My heart began pounding.
AeroSpace Dynamics wasn't simply Blake's employer.
My late father's company.
The company Blake promised to protect after my father's death.
The company whose shares I had trusted him to manage.
I turned toward him.
“What did you do?”
Blake's expression changed.
For the first time that night, I saw genuine fear.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Three federal investigators walked in.
The man in front held up his badge.
“Audrey Vance?”
I nodded.
“You need to come with us.”
I froze.
“Why?”
He glanced at Blake.
“Because we believe your husband has been preparing to transfer controlling assets out of the company.”
Blake went white.
Damien stepped closer to me.
“Don't say anything without counsel.”
I barely heard him.
The investigator looked at me.
“Mrs. Vance, there's something else.”
“What?”
“We found a private trust connected to your father's estate.”
My heart stopped.
“I thought that trust was empty.”
“It isn't.”
He handed me a sealed document.
“Your father left you a controlling interest in AeroSpace Dynamics.”
I looked at Blake.
He looked at the document.
And suddenly everything made sense.
The affair.
The lies.
The secret hotel rooms.
The mysterious corporate transfers.
Blake hadn't been trying to replace me.
He had been trying to remove me.
So he could take everything my father had left behind.
I looked at Damien.
He whispered:
May you like
“Now we know what we're really fighting.”
And as federal agents surrounded my husband, I realized our revenge had just become much bigger than marriage.
