Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO BROUGHT ME INTO THE MANSION ON PURPOSE

Bernadette had found me before I found the Rourkes.

Three months earlier, she visited St. Bridget Hospital under the pretense of volunteering.

She saw Toby.

Recognized Michael's eyes.

Then heard my name.

Laura Miller.

The woman Michael had written about.

She investigated quietly.

Found out I'd lost my restaurant job.

Found out I was drowning in medical bills.

Then created an opening at the mansion.

I stared at her.

"You hired me because of Toby."

"Yes."

"You let me believe I got lucky."

"Yes."

Anger burned through me.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I needed to know whether Dr. Kessler was still watching you."

I stood.

"So you used us as bait?"

Her face collapsed.

"No."

"That's exactly what it sounds like."

Damien stepped forward.

"Laura—"

I turned.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Good.

Bernadette began crying.

"I thought I could protect you inside the estate."

"By lying?"

"Yes."

At least she was honest.

I looked toward the door.

"I need space."

Then I left.

Toby and I moved back to our apartment that night.

Damien offered security.

I accepted only through arrangements made with my attorney.

No control.

No strings.

I was tired of secrets dressed as protection.

Three days passed.

Then Bernadette sent me a letter.

Not an apology asking forgiveness.

A confession.

Everything she knew.

Names.

Dates.

Her own role.

Her failures.

The children she remembered.

The families she hadn't been brave enough to warn.

At the end, she wrote:

I brought you into the mansion because I wanted one chance to do something right before I died.

I frowned.

Before I died?

I called.

She didn't answer.

Damien did.

"Bernadette collapsed."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"Heart failure."

We rushed to the hospital.

She survived.

Barely.

When she woke, I sat beside her.

"I am still angry."

She smiled weakly.

"You should be."

"But don't die."

One corner of her mouth moved.

"I'll try."

She later gave formal testimony.

Her evidence helped connect Helix leadership, Detective Brennan, and Dr. Kessler to the suppression of the original trial.

Brennan was found weeks later and arrested after attempting to cross into Canada.

Dr. Kessler surrendered his license and faced criminal investigation.

Families from the thirty-eight-patient list were contacted through official channels.

Some received answers after years of confusion.

Some learned children had died from complications that may have been hidden.

No happy ending could erase that.

So we didn't pretend.

The victim fund expanded.

The Rourke companies contributed assets tied to Helix profits.

Damien sold two hotels and a waterfront property to finance restitution.

I asked him once:

"Does it hurt?"

He looked at me.

"Losing the money?"

"Yes."

"No."

I didn't believe him.

He smiled sadly.

"Okay. A little."

Then he added:

"But not as much as knowing where some of it came from."

That answer stayed with me.

Toby and Lily continued treatment.

Michael recovered enough memory to understand more of his past.

Then one afternoon, he asked to speak with me alone.

"Laura."

I smiled.

"Hi."

He looked nervous.

"I owe you something."

I shook my head.

"You don't owe me a relationship."

"No."

He swallowed.

"I owe you the truth."

I waited.

He looked down.

"The night I met you, I already knew I might disappear."

My chest tightened.

"Then why did you get involved with me?"

His eyes filled.

"Because I was selfish."

I appreciated the answer.

No romance.

No excuse.

Then he said:

"But when you became pregnant, I changed the plan."

"What plan?"

"I was going to disappear permanently after exposing Helix."

I stared.

"And?"

"I decided I wanted to live."

My eyes filled.

Michael smiled sadly.

"You and Toby made me want a future."

Then he added:

"I recorded one more message before Kesler."

My heart stopped.

"For whom?"

May you like

He looked toward the hallway where Damien stood with Lily.

"For my brother."
