Chapter 11 - THE BOY BEHIND THE BASEMENT DOOR

We returned to the estate with state police and an independent tactical team.
No Rossi soldiers leading.
Gabriel agreed.
That mattered.
The house looked normal.
Too normal.
Broken sunroom glass boarded.
Persian rug gone.
My blood cleaned.
I hated that.
Vincent's Tahoe stood in the underground garage.
Empty.
Then police dogs alerted near the basement.
The same basement I'd spent two years pretending not to hear.
The door was locked from inside.
Gabriel's face changed when he saw my expression.
“What?”
“I thought people were being hurt down there.”
He almost smiled grimly.
“Sometimes men were questioned.”
“Comforting.”
The door opened.
No Vincent.
No guards.
But a hidden corridor existed behind a wine-storage wall.
Gabriel didn't know.
His own house contained rooms he hadn't known about.
Marco had built them during renovations years earlier.
At the end:
A bedroom.
Small bed.
Books.
Children's clothes.
Drawings.
A six-year-old had lived there.
Recently.
My stomach turned.
Matteo had been kept inside Gabriel's estate.
Not continuously.
But often enough to leave possessions.
How could nobody know?
The hidden corridor had independent access from old service tunnels leading beyond the property wall.
Marco could move the boy in and out.
Then we heard something.
A train whistle.
Soft.
Plastic.
From behind another door.
Gabriel stopped breathing.
Police opened it.
A boy sat beneath a table holding a toy train.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
Leo's face.
Matteo.
Gabriel took one step.
The boy scrambled backward.
“No!”
Gabriel stopped immediately.
Good.
I crouched despite the pain in my ribs.
“Hi.”
Matteo looked at me.
“Are you Elena?”
Every person in the room froze.
“Yes.”
“Mom said you'd come.”
My eyes burned.
Sofia had left messages for him too.
Dr. Shaw had shown them.
Matteo reached under the table and pulled out an old phone.
One saved video.
Sofia.
Pregnant? No—recorded after birth.
She looked exhausted.
“If you're seeing this, sweetheart, I failed to bring you home.”
Gabriel covered his mouth.
Sofia continued:
“Your father doesn't know you survived.”
Then:
“There is one person you can trust if everything goes wrong. Her name is Elena Hart. She's your cousin. She doesn't know us yet.”
I cried.
Gabriel did too.
Matteo watched.
Then asked:
“Is he my dad?”
Gabriel couldn't answer for a second.
“Yes.”
The boy stared.
“Why didn't you find me?”
That question broke him.
“I didn't know.”
Matteo looked away.
Then another door slammed somewhere in the tunnel.
Police moved.
Vincent.
Running.
They caught him near the service exit.
He surrendered.
And immediately asked for protection.
“From Marco?” Mara demanded.
Vincent shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
He looked at Gabriel.
May you like
“Your father.”
Lorenzo Rossi had known Matteo was alive.
