Chapter 12 - EMMA’S LAST MESSAGE TO ME

Emma appeared on the screen wearing one of my old college sweatshirts.

No makeup.

Hair tied up.

Exactly the woman I missed.

“Hi.”

I had to pause.

Then start again.

“Hi, Andrew.”

She smiled.

“If you’re watching this, Elizabeth has probably decided you finally deserve it.”

Behind me, Elizabeth muttered:

“She was bossy.”

For the first time in months, I laughed during something connected to Emma’s death.

Then Emma became serious.

“I need you to hear something before you turn grief into a project.”

That was also me.

“You are going to want to fix the company. Punish Nicholas. Confront your mother. Protect Alex. Find every document. Reconstruct every minute.”

She knew.

“But Andrew, our son is not a problem to solve.”

I looked toward Alex asleep on the sofa.

“He needs the version of you who sits down.”

My chest broke.

Emma continued.

“If I fail to tell you everything in person, I am sorry. I kept waiting for the proof to become perfect.”

She looked away.

“That may have been my mistake.”

No.

I shook my head at the screen even though she could not hear me.

“I didn't tell you sooner because every time I brought up your family, you became their lawyer.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

“You would say Nicholas was reckless but good-hearted. Your mother was controlling but loyal. Colin was intense but dependable.”

Emma smiled sadly.

“You always found the most generous interpretation.”

She inhaled.

“Generosity is beautiful until it becomes denial.”

I closed my eyes.

Then she said:

“If something happens to me, do not teach Alex that the James name is cursed.”

I opened them.

“Teach him people make choices.”

Her voice softened.

“Some terrible. Some brave. Some cowardly. Names don't make those choices. People do.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“And do not make him hate his grandmother for you.”

That shocked me.

“You can set boundaries without handing a child your anger.”

I thought of Victoria.

I was not ready to forgive her.

Maybe never.

But Emma was right.

Alex did not need to inherit my rage.

Then came the part I could barely survive.

“I love you.”

Simple.

No speech.

“I was angry when you left for Chicago.”

I laughed through tears.

“I wanted you to stay.”

She smiled.

“But I also loved how seriously you took your work.”

Then:

“Both things were true.”

That absolution hurt more than accusation.

“You will probably blame yourself for not being here.”

She paused.

“Don’t.”

I covered my face.

“Blame yourself for ignoring me sometimes if you need to.”

I laughed and cried simultaneously.

“But not for getting on an airplane.”

Emma leaned closer.

“Then do better next time someone you love says, ‘I need you to hear me.’”

The video ended with her blowing a kiss.

No dramatic farewell.

She had expected to live.

That was the cruelest part.

For days afterward, I did almost nothing.

No emergency board meetings.

No family confrontation.

I made Alex breakfast.

We walked in Central Park.

I let him choose a ridiculous dinosaur backpack.

Elizabeth stopped pretending to be a housekeeper.

Rosa was delighted.

“I knew she folded towels like an accountant.”

Elizabeth moved out of the staff room and into a nearby apartment I helped locate but did not pay for.

She accepted a role with the external compliance review.

Her actual skill set.

Then she surprised me.

“I’m leaving after the investigation.”

Alex overheard.

His face fell.

“Why?”

She crouched beside him.

“Because I came here for your mom.”

Alex looked at me.

Then Elizabeth corrected herself.

“And I stayed for you.”

He hugged her.

The first full embrace I had seen him initiate since Emma died.

Then he whispered:

“Can you stay for pancakes?”

Elizabeth looked at me.

I smiled.

“Pancakes are not employment.”

She smiled back.

For the first time, I saw a future that did not require everyone disappearing after the crisis.

But before any healing could become ordinary, Victoria asked for one final meeting.

May you like

She had decided to confess publicly to the board.

And she wanted to tell Alex something first.
