Chapter 5 - BRETT HAD BEEN TRYING TO REPLACE OPAL’S RECIPES BEFORE HE REPLACED HIS WIFE

The test kitchen records were devastating.

Not because companies are forbidden to develop new recipes.

They are not.

Holloway House created hundreds.

But Brett’s instructions were specific.

Develop “commercially distinct analogues” of:

Opal’s rye pear tart.

Black walnut cake.

Sunday chicken glaze.

Brown-butter onion rolls.

Four of the company’s most recognizable dishes.

The internal project name:

HERITAGE 2.0.

Audrey sat in a conference room with Eleanor, Nathan, and independent culinary counsel.

She almost laughed.

“Heritage 2.0?”

Nobody else did.

Then they played an audio note from a product-development meeting.

Brett’s voice:

If Finch ever becomes difficult, we need versions we can own completely.

Finch.

Not Audrey.

Not wife.

A licensing obstacle.

Audrey had spent twenty-three years married to that voice.

She barely recognized it.

Then Sierra spoke.

“We should tell Audrey.”

Brett replied:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she’ll turn it into something emotional.”

Audrey stopped the recording.

“Enough.”

She did not need more.

The committee continued without her for an hour.

Later, Nathan explained the legal reality.

Independent recipes can be developed.

But the company could not simply copy protectable written expression, confidential process documentation, trade dress, or misrepresent substitute recipes as Opal Finch originals.

So the Heritage 2.0 project itself was not automatically wrongdoing.

The secrecy and transaction disclosures were the larger problems.

Audrey appreciated precision.

She did not need fake legal victory.

The truth was enough.

Then Martin, the CFO, finished reviewing Sierra’s consultancy.

Out of $684,000:

Approximately $390,000 had clear deliverables.

Campaign strategy.

Photography.

Menu redesign.

Launch materials.

About $168,000 remained inadequately documented.

The rest involved pass-through production costs requiring further verification.

Again, not a cartoon theft.

A governance mess.

And Brett personally approved invoices while secretly involved with the recipient.

That was enough to trigger consequences.

Then Audrey asked:

“Why did nobody stop this?”

Martin looked ashamed.

“Because Brett had built the company.”

“So had I.”

“Yes.”

He said it plainly.

That hurt more than denial.

Then Martin continued.

“You stopped attending weekly executive meetings after Micah’s school problems three years ago.”

Audrey remembered.

Micah had severe anxiety after bullying.

She reduced her schedule.

Brett told everyone she “wanted more time at home.”

Mostly true.

Then gradually:

She stopped receiving certain decks.

Brand decisions moved to Brett and Sierra.

Investor calls happened without her.

By the time she returned more fully, the structure had changed.

No one announced it.

Power rarely sends a farewell card.

Then Nathan found another piece.

The first Holloway House restaurant had not been funded only by Audrey’s $80,000 inheritance.

Opal had also placed the original building lease inside Finch Table LLC.

Holloway House Hospitality subleased the space.

That sublease contained an old clause:

If the operating company publicly misrepresented Finch Table’s heritage contribution in a manner causing material brand confusion, Finch could require a corrected public attribution before renewal.

Not termination.

Correction.

Opal’s lawyer had apparently believed in footnotes and vengeance.

Audrey smiled for the first time in days.

Then Eleanor asked:

“What do you want the correction to say?”

Audrey thought.

Not:

Brett is a liar.

Not:

Audrey built everything.

Something factual.

Holloway House Hospitality was founded in 2016 by Audrey Finch Holloway and Brett Holloway, using original capital, recipes, and heritage assets contributed through Finch Table LLC.

Simple.

True.

Then Micah texted her.

DAD IS AT SCHOOL.

May you like

Audrey stood so quickly her chair hit the wall.

Brett had gone to see their son without telling her.
