Chapter 4 - CELESTE CALLED IT “TAKING BACK WHAT WAS OURS”

Celeste did not apologize.
That would have required believing she had done something wrong.
Instead, she sat across from the audit committee and said:
“Ashcroft never should have controlled Vale Meridian.”
I stared.
“My father saved Vale Meridian.”
“He exploited a weak moment.”
“He invested forty-six million dollars.”
“At a discount.”
“He assumed the risk everyone else refused.”
Her eyes flashed.
“You took our family company.”
I almost laughed.
“I was twenty-nine.”
“You benefited.”
There it was.
To Celeste, the recapitalization had never become business history.
It remained theft.
Ashcroft had rescued Vale Meridian, and she had spent twelve years resenting the fact that rescue came with ownership.
Daniel placed the fake authorization in front of her.
“Did you instruct anyone to attach Eleanor’s signature?”
Celeste lifted her chin.
“I was told Eleanor had already agreed to strategic review.”
“That is not the question.”
She glanced at Adrian.
He looked away.
Then:
“I told my administrator to complete the packet.”
“Using Eleanor’s signature?”
“I assumed Adrian had approval.”
Adrian’s head snapped up.
“No.”
She stared at her son.
“You said she would cooperate.”
“Eventually.”
The word hung between them.
Eventually.
Meaning nobody had asked me yet.
Celeste looked at me.
“You would have made everything difficult.”
“Yes.”
I smiled.
“Ownership tends to do that.”
Marcus nearly laughed, then stopped when she glared at him.
Charles asked why Crown Harbor mattered so much.
Celeste answered:
“Because Adrian deserves to run the company without his wife threatening him with shares every time she’s unhappy.”
I stared.
In twelve years, I had never used my voting control to interfere with Adrian’s daily management.
Not once.
Tonight was the first time.
And only after he publicly humiliated me, installed his mistress, and triggered a governance review that immediately found millions in undisclosed family spending.
“You were afraid of power I wasn’t using.”
She said nothing.
Then Daniel uncovered Celeste’s side agreement.
Crown Harbor transaction close bonus:
$12 million to a newly created Vale Heritage Advisory entity.
Five-year consulting package.
Company-paid office.
Transportation allowance.
Family legacy budget.
Marcus whispered:
“Twelve million?”
Apparently even he did not know.
Celeste’s face tightened.
“You were all going to benefit.”
“How much was I getting?” Marcus asked.
Silence.
He actually laughed.
“That means nothing.”
For the first time, the Vale family began fighting itself.
Then Vanessa entered.
Nobody had invited her.
She stood near the door.
“I think I know why the price changed.”
Everyone turned.
“What price?” Adrian asked.
She held up her phone.
“Crown Harbor’s first proposal valued Vale Meridian at $380 million.”
Naomi frowned.
“Our latest internal estimate is around three-fifty.”
Vanessa nodded.
“The proposal Adrian showed me was two-eighty.”
Silence.
“Why?”
She looked at Celeste.
“Because the missing hundred million was being shifted into side agreements and affiliated property deals.”
Celeste stood.
“That is a lie.”
Vanessa did not move.
“I have the drafts.”
Adrian looked at her.
“How?”
“I was copied.”
“Why?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Because you told Crown Harbor I would become CEO after the transition.”
I stared at Adrian.
He had promised his mistress more than EVP.
He had promised her his own chair.
Then Vanessa delivered the twist Adrian had not expected.
“But that wasn’t the final agreement.”
She opened another document.
Under the last version, Adrian would remain CEO for only eighteen months.
Then Vanessa would replace him.
Crown Harbor had been planning to remove Adrian too.
May you like
His mistress had known.
And she had never told him.
