Chapter 6 - MY UNCLE WENT TO PRISON FOR MY FATHER

His name was Daniel Lane.
My mother’s younger brother.
I found one photograph in an old newspaper archive.
Thirty-one years old.
Dark hair.
Same eyes as Mom.
Convicted of embezzling $740,000 from Dad’s construction company.
He served eight years.
I had never heard his name.
Not once.
My father built an entire childhood around removing him.
Thomas Reed had tried to contact me after Daniel’s release.
Dad blocked it.
Then moved us.
“Where is Daniel now?” I asked.
Thomas looked down.
“Boston.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know about Mom?”
“Yes.”
That hurt.
“Then why didn’t he come?”
“He did.”
Three times.
Dad got restraining orders.
Claimed Daniel was dangerous.
Daniel had a felony record.
Judges believed Dad.
Again, official documents turned lies into reality.
I drove to Boston.
Daniel lived above a small hardware store in Jamaica Plain.
He opened the door and stared.
“Emily.”
He knew me.
I did not know him.
He invited me inside.
No dramatic music.
No expensive secret.
Just an old man with tired eyes and a kitchen table covered in woodworking magazines.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“For what?”
“For not finding another way.”
I sat down.
“Did Dad frame you?”
Daniel nodded.
He had discovered missing money.
Dad convinced him to help “temporarily move” funds to cover a payroll shortfall.
Then when auditors came, every authorization carried Daniel’s name.
Dad denied involvement.
Mom knew.
She planned to testify during Daniel’s appeal.
Then came the accident.
With Mom cognitively impaired, Daniel’s appeal collapsed.
He served the sentence.
“Did Diane know?”
“She knew everything.”
I closed my eyes.
“How?”
“She worked in your father’s office.”
Of course she did.
Dad and Diane were not just having an affair.
They were colleagues.
Diane had helped create the fraudulent records.
Thomas later found copies.
Not enough to overturn the conviction then.
But maybe enough now.
Daniel looked at me.
“Why are you here?”
“Because Dad told me the family would be better off without me.”
Daniel’s mouth twitched.
“That sounds like Robert.”
“You don’t seem surprised.”
“I watched him remove people whenever they became inconvenient.”
Mom.
Daniel.
Eventually me.
Then my phone rang.
Jason.
I ignored it.
He called again.
Then texted:
EMILY PLEASE ANSWER. DAD IS IN THE HOSPITAL.
I stared.
Another message.
HE COLLAPSED AFTER POLICE CAME TO THE HOUSE.
Police?
I called my attorney.
She answered immediately.
“Emily, the lender filed a fraud referral.”
My heartbeat quickened.
“They’re investigating the forged mortgage.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“There’s more.”
Investigators searched the house because Jason tried to destroy documents.
Inside Dad’s locked study they found old financial records.
Including files from Daniel’s case.
Original ledgers.

Signed by my father.
Evidence that could prove Daniel had been framed more than thirty years earlier.
