Chapter 9 - MY FATHER HAD HIDDEN A FILE UNDER PARCEL SEVEN

Dominic did not know about archive.
Neither did Matteo.
That bothered him.
The storage building was legally owned by my trust.
We entered with trustee counsel, locksmith, and security.
No dramatic midnight break-in.
Inside:
Old desks.
Shipping maps.
Fireproof cabinets.
Boxes labeled by year.
Dad had used the site as a quiet records location.
Why?
Parcel Seven had once been Moretti Midwest operations office.
Then automation moved elsewhere.
He kept archives.
One cabinet showed signs of recent opening.
Nico photographed.
Richard and Samuel Mercer had entered.
Did they take something?
Inventory uncertain.
Then we found a note:
COLE — PERSONAL
Empty folder.
Great.
Dad had stored a Cole file.
Someone removed contents.
Richard?
Samuel?
Then another drawer.
Copies.
Dad never trusted originals alone.
Inside:
Correspondence between Giovanni Moretti and Richard Cole dating back seventeen years.
Before I met Adrian.
Richard owed Dad money.
Not company.
Personal.
$11 million.
Why?
Failed real-estate partnership in Cleveland.
Dad covered a capital call when Richard could not.
Repayment schedule.
Richard paid only $3 million.
Remaining converted into equity rights.
Which equity?
Cole Infrastructure.
That explained Dad’s 8% stake.
Not just investment.
Debt settlement.
Then another letter.
Richard:
Giovanni, if something happens to me, do not let Margaret manage Adrian’s inheritance alone.
My stomach tightened.
Why?
Richard already distrusted wife years ago.
Dad:
Then appoint independent trustee.
Richard:
She won’t accept.
Dad:
She does not need to enjoy boundaries for them to work.
Dad again.
Then Adrian was only nineteen.
What inheritance?
A trust from Richard’s father.
Value now perhaps $60 million.
Trustee:
Margaret.
Co-trustee originally:
Samuel Mercer.
Samuel resigned five years ago.
Why?
Pressure.
Margaret gained more control.
Then Dad’s notes:
Adrian does not know Richard is not his biological father.
I stopped.
No.
I looked at Dominic.
He stared at same line.
“Dad knew?”
Apparently.
Who was biological father?
Not stated on first page.
Then another:
Do not use this information in business negotiations. It belongs to Adrian.
Good.
Dad refused leverage.
Then why file?
Because Richard had confided.
Who father?
Page missing.
Removed from original folder perhaps.
Richard and Samuel had come here to retrieve it.
Why now?
Because Silver Harbor investigation might expose?
Maybe.
Then copy in second cabinet.
Dad duplicated.
Name:
Malcolm Hart.
My stomach turned.
Vanessa’s father?
No.
That would mean Adrian and Vanessa could be half-siblings if same father. They had affair—unsafe incest twist. Avoid. Need not do that. Maybe Malcolm Hart is not father? Could be another Hart, e.g., Thomas Hart, Malcolm's brother, still blood relation cousin. Adrian and Vanessa cousins then sexual relation still problematic. Avoid.
Choose biological father unrelated: Samuel Mercer. Then explains Mercer involvement, old appendix. Adrian’s biological father was family attorney. That makes Catherine his half-sister perhaps, but no sexual issue. Fine.
Copy said:
Samuel Mercer.
I stared.
The attorney who drafted Dad’s protection agreement.
The man Richard brought to Parcel Seven.
Samuel had fathered Adrian?
Then why help Richard?
Guilt.
Secrecy.
We called him through Luca.
He admitted.
Decades earlier, he and Margaret had an affair during a separation in her marriage.
Adrian conceived.
Richard knew after private testing when Adrian was five.
He stayed.
Raised him.
Loved him.
They decided never to tell.
Samuel remained family lawyer.
Horrible conflict.
Dad learned because Richard told him during financial crisis.
Why tell Dad?
He feared Margaret and Samuel might someday combine control over Adrian’s trust.
Dad advised independent governance.
Then Samuel resigned as co-trustee years later.
Why only five years ago?
Because Adrian began asking business questions and Samuel could not ethically continue without disclosure.
He still did not confess paternity.
Cowardice.
Then why come to Parcel Seven with Richard?
Richard called him after assault.
They feared archive contained paternity file.
Why care now?
Richard did not want scandal layered onto company crisis.
Samuel did not want Adrian learning from investigators.
They removed original.
But Dad’s copies remained.
I was furious.
Not because paternity affected me.
Because they trespassed onto trust property and took records.
We handled legally.
Richard admitted entry after confronted.
He had an old key from Dad.
Thought permission survived.
It did not.
He returned file.
Then I asked him:
“Why hide this from Adrian?”
Richard looked suddenly old.
“Because he is my son.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“He is mine because I raised him.”
“Then why would biology threaten that?”
Richard had no answer.
Same disease.
Families who claimed blood mattered only when convenient.
Then:
“Does Margaret know Adrian never learned?”
“Yes.”
“Samuel?”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
Good.
Then Adrian.
Who tells?
Richard wanted private.
We agreed.
Not my job.
Adrian came to office.
Richard.
Margaret.
Samuel.
Luca present only at Adrian’s request after learning something major coming.
I did not attend initially.
Then Adrian called me afterward.
His voice sounded hollow.
“Did you know?”
“For two days.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“It was your father’s truth to tell.”
“Which father?”
That hurt.
Then:
“Samuel?”
“Yes.”
He laughed.
The man he paid four million trying to get Appendix C was his biological father.
The irony was brutal.
Then:
“Did your father know?”
“Yes.”
“That man knew everything.”
“Too much.”
“Why didn’t Giovanni tell me?”
“Because you were nineteen when he learned.”
“And later?”
“Because Richard asked him not to.”
Adrian went quiet.
Then:
“He respected someone else’s secrecy more than my right to know.”
“I think Dad believed it wasn’t his truth to expose.”
“Do you agree?”
I thought.
“I don’t know.”
Honest.
Then Adrian said:
“There’s something Richard told me about your father.”
My stomach tightened.
“Another thing?”
“Giovanni didn’t keep the Cole file because of my paternity.”
“Then why?”
“Because Samuel Mercer had another client.”
Who?
My father.
Not just attorney in deals.
Personal estate counsel?
No.
Samuel had helped Dad structure a trust no Moretti child knew existed.
Beneficiary:
A woman named Sofia Romano.
I knew that name.
Everyone in my family did.
My father’s first fiancée.
The woman who disappeared from his life before he married our mother.
According to family story, Sofia died in a car accident thirty-eight years ago.

But Samuel said there had never been a death certificate.
And Dad had sent money to a trust in her name until the year he died.
