Chapter 2 - MAREN HAD MY SIGNATURE

The backyard changed after that.
People stopped looking at Maren like the pregnant friend caught in an affair.
They started looking at her like someone who had walked into another woman’s home carrying documents.
She sat down slowly.
“Tessa…”
“How did you file paperwork with my signature?”
She looked at Gavin.
There.
That was enough.
Gavin stepped forward.
“It was already signed.”
“No.”
I kept my voice calm.
“I signed two refinance disclosures. Not a transfer deed.”
His face tightened.
“That’s what you remember.”
The cruelty in that sentence stunned even his mother.
What you remember.
The implication.
Pregnant.
Hormonal.
Confused.
I smiled.
“Good thing Rachel keeps copies.”
Gavin went pale again.
Three days before the baby shower, Rachel had obtained the packet I actually signed.
My initials appeared only on the refinance pages.
The property-transfer page contained a signature that looked like mine.
Very close.
But not mine.
Maren started crying.
“I didn’t forge it.”
“I didn’t ask if you forged it.”
She stopped.
I turned to Gavin.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Silence.
Paul said sharply:
“Answer your wife.”
Gavin snapped:
“She’s not acting like my wife.”
I looked at him.
“No. I’m acting like the owner of the house.”
Maren’s hand went protectively to her stomach.
For one brief second, I felt cruel.
Then I remembered she had spent months sitting beside me while helping a man plan how to move me out of my own property.
Compassion did not require stupidity.
Rachel arrived twenty minutes later.
I had invited her deliberately.
Not to perform.
To witness.
She walked through the side gate carrying a leather folder.
Gavin looked at her and muttered:
“You called a lawyer to your baby shower?”
Rachel answered before I could.
“She called me twelve days ago.”
The silence that followed was almost beautiful.
Gavin stared at me.
“You’ve known for twelve days?”
“Yes.”
Maren whispered:
“All this time?”
“Yes.”
Every lunch.
Every fake smile.
Every time Maren rubbed my belly and asked if the baby was kicking.
I knew.
Rachel opened her folder.
“The county filing has been frozen pending fraud review.”
Gavin’s face reddened.
“This is ridiculous.”
“No,” Rachel said.
“This is property law.”
Then she removed another page.
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.
The LLC Gavin created had not been formed last month.
It had been formed eleven months earlier.
Before Maren was pregnant.
Before the baby shower.
Possibly before the affair started.
Entity name:
GTM Family Holdings.
Gavin.
Tessa.
Maren.
My stomach turned.
He had put his mistress’s initial into the company name before I even knew she was part of our marriage.
Then Rachel said:
“Gavin, would you like to explain why GTM Family Holdings has already borrowed four hundred thousand dollars?”
I looked at him.
“What?”
The loan was real.
Secured by a future interest in my house.
May you like
And the lender was someone sitting at my baby shower.
Gavin’s father.
