Chapter 1 - THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS

The doors opened slowly.
Eleanor expected to see police officers.
Instead, the first person who entered was a thin, gray-haired man carrying a black evidence box.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Brielle lowered her phone.
The six guests who had been laughing only moments earlier suddenly became very quiet.
Eleanor recognized the man immediately.
“Daniel?”
Daniel Cross had been the chief financial investigator for Hawthorne Care Group for nearly twenty years.
He had retired two years earlier.
Or so Marcus believed.
Daniel placed the evidence box on the table.
Then two uniformed officers entered behind him.
Marcus stood.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“You know exactly what this is.”
Marcus glanced toward Eleanor.
“Mom, tell them to leave.”
Eleanor didn't move.
Daniel opened the box.
Inside were folders.
Bank statements.
Signed contracts.
Photocopies of checks.
And a small silver flash drive.
Brielle whispered, “Marcus…”
“Shut up.”
Daniel pulled out the first folder.
“Eleanor, before we continue, I need to confirm something.”
She nodded.
“Did you authorize your son to access your personal investment accounts?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize him to change your power of attorney?”
“No.”
“Did you sign a document transferring ownership of Hawthorne Care Group?”
Eleanor's eyes hardened.
“No.”
Marcus suddenly stepped forward.
“She's confused.”
The room went silent.
Eleanor looked at him.
That was the first time her son had ever said those words directly to her face.
She's confused.
For months, Marcus had been quietly suggesting that she was becoming forgetful.
He had repeated it to relatives.
To employees.
To doctors.
Even to her own friends.
He had told everyone that Eleanor couldn't manage complicated financial decisions anymore.
Now she understood why.
It wasn't concern.
It was preparation.
Daniel turned toward the officers.
“That's enough.”
One officer stepped toward Marcus.
“You need to come with us.”
Marcus laughed.
“For what?”
“Financial fraud, identity theft, elder exploitation, and conspiracy.”
Brielle immediately stood.
“Wait. I'm not involved in any of this.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You recorded tonight's incident, didn't you?”
She slowly lowered her phone.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He held out his hand.
“Because your recording captured something useful.”
Brielle stared at him.
“What?”
“You filmed the moment Marcus admitted he had taken control of Eleanor's finances.”
Marcus's face changed.
“You can't use that.”
Daniel smiled.
“Actually, we can.”
Eleanor watched her son's confidence collapse.
But she still didn't understand one thing.
Why had the police arrived tonight?
Daniel opened the black flash drive.
“This is why.”
He connected it to the restaurant's private screen.
A video appeared.
Eleanor's breath caught.
It showed Marcus entering her office six months earlier.
He was carrying a folder.
He opened her desk.
Removed her passport.
Then opened the locked drawer containing her financial documents.
But that wasn't the worst part.
Another person entered the room.
Brielle.
Then someone else.
Eleanor leaned forward.
Her heart began pounding.
It was her longtime attorney.
The man she had trusted for fifteen years.
He placed several documents on the desk.
Marcus signed them.
Brielle witnessed them.
Then the attorney looked directly at the security camera.
And said:
“Once Eleanor is declared incompetent, the company belongs to Marcus.”
Eleanor stared at the screen.
Her hands began trembling.
The attorney had always told her he was protecting her.
He had been doing the opposite.
Daniel paused the video.
“There's more.”
He opened another folder.
“This conspiracy didn't begin six months ago.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“How long?”
Daniel's expression became grim.
“Seven years.”
Marcus suddenly lunged toward the evidence box.
The officers grabbed him.
“Let me go!”
Eleanor didn't move.
She simply watched.
Because Daniel had not yet shown her the final file.
The one marked:
PROJECT ELEANOR.

And beneath it was a date from seven years earlier.
The same week her husband died.
