Chapter 6 - THE SENTENCE ADDED AFTER MY SIGNATURE

Forensic document review took three days.
The result was simple.
The handwritten sentence had been added after I signed.
Different ink.
Different pressure.
Different date characteristics.
Daniel denied writing it.
Theresa denied everything.
Lauren refused to speak with me.
Aaron texted:
You are destroying the family over paperwork.
I saved the message.
Then Priya called.
“We found where Daniel's salary went.”
I sat upright.
“Cypress?”
“Some.”
“Where else?”
She sent me a report.
Daniel had earned more than $520,000 over the previous three years.
Roughly $310,000 went into Cypress and Maison Alder.
Another $92,000 serviced private debt.
Another $47,000 went toward Lauren and Aaron.
That left something missing.
“Where's the rest?”
“Cash withdrawals and one recurring transfer.”
Recipient:
VIOLET RIDGE ADVISORY.
$4,000 monthly.
Thirty months.
$120,000.
“What is Violet Ridge?”
We searched corporate registrations.
Registered agent:
Melissa Grant.
I had never heard the name.
Daniel did.
When I asked, he went silent.
I knew instantly this secret was different.
“Who is Melissa?”
“A consultant.”
“For what?”
“Business.”
“What business?”
“Maison Alder.”
“She isn't listed anywhere.”
Daniel became angry.
“Stop interrogating every person I know.”
That was enough.
Monica hired an investigator only to verify financial relationships, not spy on anyone's private life.
The result arrived within forty-eight hours.
Melissa Grant owned a boutique marketing firm.
She had worked with Daniel professionally.
She also owned a townhome.
Daniel's car had been registered as an authorized parking vehicle there for nearly two years.
My chest turned cold.
“Is he having an affair?”
Monica stayed careful.
“We don't know.”
I called Melissa myself.
She answered.
When I said my name, silence.
Then:
“I told him this would happen.”
Not denial.
I almost hung up.
Instead:
“What exactly would happen?”
“He said you knew.”
About what?
The affair?
The payments?
The business?
Melissa started crying.
“Natalie, I don't want your husband.”
That confused me.
“Then what is this?”
She explained.
Daniel had invested in her company.
Privately.
$120,000.
He was supposed to receive equity when she expanded.
He claimed the money was his separate inheritance.
He never told her it came from marital income while I paid his personal obligations.
“And the parking?”
“He uses my office garage when he meets investors downtown.”
Possibly true.
Possibly not.
Then Melissa said:
“You should ask him about Harbor View.”
“What is Harbor View?”
A long pause.
“The apartment he bought last year.”
Another hidden property.
May you like
This one was not in Cypress.
It was titled solely in Daniel's name.
