Chapter 11 - THE MARRIAGE MARCO TRIED TO USE

Marco had known exactly who I was when Dante first asked me to dinner.

That truth changed everything again.

He saw Sophia Bennett reappear in Chicago.

He saw her meet Antonio Moretti’s son.

And instead of killing me, he waited.

Why?

Because I became useful.

The file contained surveillance reports.

SOPHIA BENNETT HAS DEVELOPED PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH D. MORETTI.

DO NOT INTERFERE.

Later:

ENGAGEMENT LIKELY.

CONTINUE OBSERVATION.

Then:

MARRIAGE CREATES POTENTIAL LEVERAGE.

Dante read the page twice.

“Leverage against me.”

“Yes.”

“And you.”

“Yes.”

Marco had spent years waiting for either of us to become useful against the other.

My old knowledge could expose Orfeo.

Dante’s empire could protect it.

A marriage between us gave Marco access to both possibilities.

Then I found something worse.

A report dated six weeks before our wedding.

SUBJECT HAS NOT INFORMED D. MORETTI OF GENEVA HISTORY.

HIGH PROBABILITY OF FUTURE TRUST FRACTURE.

Marco knew our marriage contained a fault line.

He simply waited for the right moment to crack it.

I sat back.

“That dinner wasn’t just about exposing Lucia.”

Dante looked at me.

“He wanted us to turn on each other.”

Exactly.

If I humiliated Dante publicly, I weakened him before the Bellinis.

If Dante dismissed me, he weakened our marriage.

If I revealed my past, mistrust followed.

Marco’s plan worked almost perfectly.

Dante closed the folder.

“We are not giving him that.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The end of us.”

That sounded dangerously close to a command.

He caught himself.

“No.”

He exhaled.

“I don’t get to decide that.”

Progress.

I sat beside him.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“You should have asked.”

“Yes.”

“I shouldn’t have investigated you before our first date.”

He thought about it.

“Given my surname, that was probably sensible.”

I laughed despite myself.

Then he took my hand.

“I married a version of you I never bothered to understand completely.”

“And I married you while keeping a locked room inside myself.”

Neither of us came out innocent.

Maybe that helped.

Then Daniel arrived with one final piece of evidence.

A sealed letter recovered from Antonio Moretti’s private safe.

Addressed to Dante.

Never delivered.

Dante opened it.

Son,

If Marco survives me, he will eventually come for you.

If Sophia Bennett ever crosses your path, listen to her.

She sees the parts of contracts men like us ignore.

I hired Julien Marchand because Sophia found what none of my own people could.

I tried to get her out of Geneva because she was right.

Dante stopped reading.

My eyes burned.

Antonio Moretti had known my work.

He had saved my life.

And somehow, years before I married his son, he had imagined we might meet.

The letter ended with one final warning.

Do not let this family teach you that a woman becomes less dangerous when she becomes your wife.

Dante laughed softly.

“My father is insulting me from the grave.”

“He’s doing an excellent job.”

Then he turned serious.

“I think I finally understand what he meant.”

“So do I.”

But there was one more line.

If Lucia has not already told you, ask her who truly owns Moretti Maritime.

Dante frowned.

May you like

The answer was not him.

It had never been.
