Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO HIRED ME FOR A REASON

Rosa cried when I asked who had hired me.
“You did,” she said.
“I interviewed me?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No, Rosa. I don’t.”
She sat down.
Three years earlier, one week after I escaped Caleb, I had walked into Castellano’s looking for work.
Rosa hired me before I finished filling out the application.
I thought she felt sorry for me.
She hadn’t.
“Teresa gave me a list before she died,” Rosa said.
“What list?”
“Names.”
She opened an old recipe book.
Inside the cover were four names.
My father.
Sophia.
Vincent.
And me.
“Teresa told me if you ever walked through that door, I was supposed to give you a job.”
My eyes filled.
“Why?”
“She said your father once saved her son’s life.”
Vincent looked startled.
“My father?”
Rosa nodded.
Years earlier, Robert Hayes had discovered an accounting trap designed to make federal investigators believe Vincent personally controlled Carlo’s secret transactions.
Robert quietly changed one filing and prevented Vincent from being arrested for crimes he didn’t know existed.
Teresa learned the truth.
She never forgot.
Neither did Robert.
The safe-deposit key led to a Manhattan bank.
Box 614.
Inside were paper ledgers, photographs, and one sealed letter.
FROM ROBERT TO AMELIA.
My hands shook opening it.
My father explained everything.
He had been building a case against Carlo and Lawson.
Sophia had joined him.
When Robert realized someone was following him, he hid the originals.
Then came the sentence that broke me.
If you are reading this, sweetheart, I probably failed to come home.
I stopped.
Vincent reached toward me.
Then waited.
“Can I?”
I nodded.
His hand closed gently around mine.
My father’s letter continued.
He told me never to confuse love with fear.
Never to believe a man owned me because he claimed to protect me.
And never to stay somewhere I had to become smaller to survive.
I cried harder at that than I had at his funeral.
Then I reached the final page.
Caleb Ward had approached my father before Sophia’s death.
He wanted out.
He wanted immunity.
Robert almost trusted him.
Almost.
But Caleb had one weakness.
Fear.
When Carlo threatened him, Caleb switched sides.
He helped destroy Sophia’s evidence.
Then, years later, Caleb married me because he believed my father had told me where the original ledger was hidden.
I hadn’t known anything.

Caleb had spent two years abusing and interrogating a woman who genuinely had no answers.
And now the original ledger was finally in my hands.
