Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO UNDERSTOOD EVERY SECRET

Marco’s video lasted forty-three seconds.
He signed:
Emma, bring Lucia’s original ledger.
Then:
Dante comes alone.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
If anyone else appears, Lily dies.
Emma replayed it.
Again.
Again.
The part that hurt most was not the threat.
It was fluency.
Marco’s hands were effortless.
He had understood Lucia every time she signed near him.
Every warning.
Every grief.
Every private sentence.
“He knew,” Emma whispered.
Dante looked murderous.
“He knew everything.”
Lucia sat beside them.
When shown the video, she went pale.
Then signed:
I trusted him.
Dante’s jaw tightened.
So had he.
Emma turned to Dante.
“I’m going.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“My sister.”
“My responsibility.”
Emma’s anger flashed.
“She is not your responsibility. She is my family.”
Dante stopped.
Wrong wording.
Again.
He corrected himself.
“She is in danger because of my family.”
“That still doesn’t give you ownership of the decision.”
Silence.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.”
Emma blinked.
“Fine?”
“We do it your way.”
“What’s my way?”
“You tell me.”
That surprised her more than agreement.
They built a plan.
Emma would carry a copy of the ledger.
Dante would appear alone.
Federal agents working through Dante’s attorney would remain outside the perimeter.
Lucia refused to stay behind.
Absolutely refused.
Emma translated Dante’s protest.
Lucia signed:
If you order me to stay home, I will hit you with my purse.
Dante exhaled.
“Fine.”
The exchange location was an abandoned ferry terminal.
Lily sat on a chair near the windows.
Marco stood beside her.
Matteo waited farther back.
Dante entered first.
Emma beside him.
Lucia behind them.
Marco laughed.
“You brought your mother.”
Lucia signed:
Coward.
Marco understood.
His expression changed.
Dante saw it.
“You spent years pretending.”
Marco shrugged.
“Useful skill.”
“Why?”
“Because people say extraordinary things around someone they believe cannot hear.”
Lucia’s face hardened.
Emma had seen that exact humiliation before.
But this time Lucia did not lower her hands.
She signed directly at Marco.
You were never invisible. You were simply small.
Emma translated.
Dante almost smiled.
Matteo stepped forward.
“Enough.”
He demanded the ledger.
Emma held it up.
“Lily first.”
“No.”
Dante’s voice stayed calm.
“That was the deal.”
Matteo pointed a gun at Lily.
Then a second gunshot sounded.
Not from Dante.
Not from federal agents.
Marco had fired.
At Matteo.
The older man fell.
Chaos erupted.
Lily dropped to the floor.
Dante moved toward her.
Emma screamed.
Marco raised his gun again.
Then signed at Dante:
I was never working for him.
Dante froze.
Marco turned the gun toward himself.
Emma shouted:
“No!”
He stopped.
Barely.
Then signed:
I was working for your father.
And the secret was somehow worse.

Vittorio Moretti had created a contingency network before his death.
Marco had been maintaining it ever since.
