Chapter 7 - THE LETTER COLE HID FOR TWO YEARS

I went back to the apartment that afternoon.

Not alone.

A court order allowed me access.

Rebecca came.

So did a neutral officer.

Nolan stayed downstairs because I asked him to.

I needed one room in my life that did not contain a man who knew secrets about me.

Cole was not there.

His closet was half empty.

The Tiffany box was gone.

So was his passport.

But inside his locked office, we found a drawer containing correspondence addressed to me.

Dozens of letters.

Nolan Mercer.

Bennett Trust Administration.

Independent Trustee Notice.

Return requested.

Cole had never returned them.

He had opened them.

Then hidden them.

Two years of warnings.

Two years of chances I never knew existed.

One envelope remained sealed.

Dated eighteen months earlier.

I opened it.

Ms. Whitmore,

I have reason to believe your proxy authority is being used beyond the scope you were told. Please contact me privately.

I sat down.

If I had received that letter, perhaps everything would have changed.

Then I found another document.

A response supposedly from me.

I had already seen the forged version Nolan kept.

But this copy contained metadata.

Created on Cole’s office computer.

Edited by:

SIERRA LANE.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Sierra lied about when she became involved.”

My stomach tightened.

Sierra claimed the affair began six months earlier.

Yet eighteen months ago she was already helping Cole forge my correspondence.

I called her.

She answered immediately.

“You edited a letter in my name eighteen months ago.”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

“You said you became involved six months ago.”

“With Cole romantically.”

“So you were helping him before that.”

“I was his lawyer.”

“You forged my refusal.”

“He told me you approved the wording.”

“You believed him?”

“At first.”

That qualification mattered.

“When did you stop believing him?”

“And you kept helping.”

“Yes.”

Her honesty did not earn forgiveness.

It did earn evidence.

“Why?”

“Because by then he had something on me.”

Another trap.

Another person telling herself fear removed choice.

Sierra explained that Cole discovered she had concealed a serious accounting irregularity at her old firm to protect a junior associate.

Not criminal on her part initially.

But enough to destroy her career.

He used it.

“I should have walked away anyway.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

Then she said:

“Lauren, there’s something else in his office.”

I looked around.

“What?”

“Behind the framed photograph of you and the twins.”

My skin crawled.

I found it on the bookshelf.

Removed the back panel.

A small digital recorder fell out.

Rebecca turned it on.

Cole’s voice.

Then another man.

Older.

Unfamiliar.

COLE:

She still trusts me completely.

MAN:

Good. Keep it that way until the children are born.

COLE:

And afterward?

MAN:

Afterward, Lauren becomes optional.

I stared at Rebecca.

“Who is that?”

She did not know.

But Nolan did.

When I played it for him downstairs, all color left his face.

“That’s Dr. Samuel Voss.”

“Who?”

“The man who helped force your father out of his own company.”

Then Nolan looked toward the building.

“Lauren, if Voss is involved, Cole isn’t the person running this.”

May you like

My husband had betrayed me.

But someone older had apparently built the road he was walking on.
