Chapter 12 - THE DAY I REFUSED TO BE AFRAID

Victoria Blackwood had one final plan.
If she couldn't control Elijah through the hospital, she would try to control him through the courts.
But this time, I wasn't a frightened maid hiding medical bills in her robe.
I had an attorney.
Evidence.
And people willing to listen.
Rebecca reviewed the proposed guardianship documents.
Several claims were demonstrably inaccurate.
They described me as absent from Elijah's care.
Unemployed.
Financially irresponsible.
And unwilling to cooperate with his medical team.
I stared at the pages.
"She knows none of that is true."
Rebecca nodded.
"Then we'll respond with records."
We gathered employment information.
Hospital attendance logs.
Medical appointment histories.
And statements from people who knew how I'd cared for Elijah.
Maya provided a professional statement within the limits of her role.
The hospital social worker documented my involvement.
And Gabriel, after consulting his own attorney, confirmed that I'd raised Elijah alone because he'd been deceived about our circumstances.
I hadn't expected that.
When Rebecca told me, I began crying.
For six years, I'd carried everything.
Now someone was finally acknowledging it.
Then Kieran offered to testify about my employment.
I hesitated.
"Would that help?"
Rebecca nodded.
"His records can establish your work schedule and income. A factual statement would be relevant."
I looked toward Kieran.
He smiled faintly.
"I've never seen anyone work harder than you."
My throat tightened.
"Thank you."
He continued.
"And I've never seen someone so exhausted who still remembers to leave cookies for the guards."
I laughed through tears.
"That's because they're terrible at feeding themselves."
He smiled.
"Apparently."
The guardianship effort did not succeed.
The court reviewed the evidence and found no basis to remove Elijah from my care through Victoria's requested process.
I cried when Rebecca told me.
Not because I'd won some competition.
Because my son could finally rest without adults using him as leverage.
Meanwhile, the criminal investigation advanced.
Sebastian and Victoria faced serious allegations involving fraud, falsified records, intimidation, and interference with medical privacy.
The warehouse fire remained under review.
Authorities continued gathering evidence.
Some witnesses cooperated.
Others contested the allegations.
But the network of lies was beginning to collapse.
Then Elijah's treatment date arrived.
I barely slept the night before.
Kieran offered to stay at the hospital.
I considered it.
Then nodded.
"Okay."
He sat beside me in the waiting area.
Didn't make promises.
Didn't tell me everything would be fine.
He simply remained there.
Hours passed.
I stared at the clock.
Then at my hands.
Then at Captain Pickles sitting beside me.
Finally, Dr. Parker approached.
I stood so quickly my knees nearly buckled.
"How is he?"
She smiled gently.
"The procedure went as planned. Elijah is stable and being closely monitored."
I covered my mouth.
Tears streamed down my face.
Kieran stood beside me.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I whispered, "Thank God."
The doctor explained the next steps.
Monitoring.
Recovery.
Follow-up.
There would still be challenges.
But there was hope.
Real hope.
When I finally entered Elijah's room, he was sleeping.
His little hand rested beside the blanket.
I gently touched his fingers.
"Mommy's here."
His eyes opened slightly.
"Captain Pickles?"
I laughed through tears.
"Right here, baby."
He smiled faintly.
Then whispered, "Love you more than anything."
My heart broke open.
The same words I'd whispered into the phone at 3:07 a.m.
The words that had started everything.
I kissed his forehead.
"Love you more than anything too."
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Rebecca.
Investigators had recovered a final document from Sebastian's office.
It was a letter from Alexander Blackwood.
Kieran's late father.
Addressed to Gabriel Torres.
And its contents revealed something nobody expected.
Alexander had known Elijah's mother was being threatened.
He'd tried to arrange protection.
But the person assigned to carry out his instructions was Sebastian.

And the letter ended with one sentence.
IF THEY EVER HURT SARAPHINA OR HER CHILD, KIERAN MUST KNOW THE TRUTH.
