Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO WAS STILL ALIVE

Arthur Costello had buried his father fifteen years earlier.

Now he was learning the man might still be alive.

His name was Dominic Costello.

A ruthless criminal leader.

A man who built the family empire through fear.

And a father who taught Arthur that weakness was unforgivable.

Arthur stared at Clara.

"My father?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

He shook his head.

"Impossible."

Clara looked down.

"Victor needed him."

"For what?"

"Access to the original family trust."

Arthur's expression hardened.

The trust controlled several valuable properties and financial accounts.

Victor had spent years trying to manipulate it.

But certain transactions required Dominic Costello's authorization.

Clara continued.

"Victor couldn't access everything after the boating incident."

"So he kept my father alive?"

She nodded.

"Under another identity."

Arthur covered his face.

For years, he'd believed both parents were gone.

Now he was learning the past had been manufactured around him.

I watched his expression.

The pain was unmistakable.

But something else appeared.

Fear.

Not of his father.

Of what confronting him might mean.

Arthur had built his adult life trying to become a stronger version of Dominic Costello.

Now he might have to face the man who taught him cruelty.

The investigation continued.

Authorities reviewed financial records and private medical facilities connected to Victor.

Eventually, they located a patient whose identity matched Dominic Costello.

Arthur agreed to a supervised meeting.

I accompanied him only after he asked and I freely agreed.

The facility was quiet.

Dominic sat in a wheelchair near a window.

His hair was white.

His face thinner than the photographs.

But his eyes remained sharp.

When Arthur entered, the old man looked up.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Dominic whispered:

"Arthur?"

Arthur stopped breathing.

"Dad."

The old man began crying.

It was the first time Arthur had ever seen him cry.

"My son."

Arthur approached slowly.

They embraced.

Not easily.

Not without years of pain.

But they embraced.

Afterward, Dominic looked toward me.

"Who's she?"

Arthur hesitated.

Then answered:

"Norah Hayes."

Dominic's expression changed.

"Daniel's daughter?"

I nodded.

His eyes filled.

"Your father was a brave man."

My throat tightened.

"Thank you."

Dominic looked down.

Then whispered:

"I failed him."

For the first time, I heard a Costello admit responsibility without making excuses.

Dominic continued.

"Victor used my name to hide financial crimes."

Arthur leaned forward.

"And you let him?"

The old man closed his eyes.

"For too long."

Silence.

Then Dominic looked toward his son.

"Arthur, there's something you need to know."

Arthur waited.

"Samuel Voss came to see me before he died."

My stomach tightened.

"The man Arthur killed?"

Dominic nodded.

"He had evidence."

Arthur's expression changed.

"What evidence?"

"Financial records proving Victor's crimes."

Arthur looked down.

Then Dominic whispered:

"Samuel wanted to warn you."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"He attacked me."

Dominic shook his head.

"That's not what he told me he planned."

Silence.

Then the old man added:

"Samuel said someone was going to make the meeting look like a betrayal."

Arthur's face drained of color.

I leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

Dominic looked directly at Arthur.

May you like

And whispered:

"Someone wanted you to kill Samuel before he could tell you the truth."
