Chapter 8 - SOMEONE HAD BEEN PAYING MY DEBT

Norah checked her collection account herself.
Balance reduced by $7,500.
Payment source:
Anonymous charitable assistance.
She had not applied for assistance.
Arthur had not paid it.
He said so before she asked.
That mattered more than she expected.
“Who did?”
Marco traced it to the Costello Community Medical Fund.
Norah laughed bitterly.
“Your family has a medical charity?”
Arthur’s mouth tightened.
“Yes.”
“After stealing employee healthcare money?”
“I’m beginning to appreciate the irony.”
The charity had been created twelve years earlier.
Founder:
Salvatore Costello.
Co-founder:
Daniel Calloway.
Norah stared.
Her father helped build it.
Arthur knew nothing.
Again.
Salvatore had apparently tried to repair the damage from the original Meridian theft without publicly admitting it.
Daniel agreed only if benefits went to workers’ families first.
Then the relationship collapsed.
Why?
The ledger explained.
Daniel discovered Anthony still controlled some healthcare contracts.
He accused Salvatore of protecting his brother.
Salvatore insisted he needed proof before removing him.
Daniel left.
The charity continued.
Quietly.
Norah’s family never used it.
Pride?
Anger?
Or someone blocked them.
Then the recent payment authorization surfaced.
Signed:
ELENA COSTELLO.
Arthur looked at his cousin.
Elena frowned.
“I approved a batch of assistance grants yesterday.”
“Did Nora apply?”
“No.”
“Then why was she included?”
Elena opened the batch.
Nora’s name had been inserted after her approval.
By Nicholas Fabbri.
Again.
Norah’s skin prickled.
“Why pay my debt if he’s trying to steal the trust?”
Arthur answered.
“To make you look connected to us.”
“If investigators find the payment…”
“It appears the Costellos are buying your cooperation.”
Or compensating her.
Or manipulating the beneficiary.
A future challenge could claim Norah had accepted private settlement.
Nicholas was building legal confusion around her before she even knew she had rights.
Then police found something in Nicholas’s airport luggage.
A copy of Daniel Calloway’s death certificate.
Photographs of Norah entering the Costello estate.
Her debt records.
And an envelope addressed to Anthony Costello.
Inside:
SHE DOESN’T KNOW YET.
Arthur read it.
No signature.
But Nicholas had carried it.
Then another item.
A storage-unit key.
The unit belonged to Daniel Calloway until his death.
Norah had never known it existed.
They opened it under her authority the next morning.
Inside were boxes.
Old tax files.
Her mother’s medical records.
Daniel’s teaching certificates.
And one videotape.
Label:
SALVATORE — IF YOU EVER DECIDE TO BE A FATHER BEFORE A BOSS.
Arthur almost smiled.
“My father must have loved him.”
Norah inserted the tape.
Daniel appeared.
Older than the photograph.
Tired.
Angry.
He looked directly at the camera.
“Salvatore, Anthony is not the worst problem in your family.”
Arthur went still.
Daniel continued.
“The worst problem is the son you raised to believe rules matter more than truth.”
Norah looked at Arthur.
The tape had been recorded when Arthur was seventeen.
Then Daniel said:
“If you don’t change what you’re teaching Arthur, one day somebody will point him at an innocent man and call it justice.”
Victor.
May you like
Arthur stopped breathing.
Daniel Calloway had predicted exactly what happened twenty years later.
