Chapter 4 - MY MARRIAGE STARTED BEFORE I KNEW DANIEL

I wanted my mother to deny it.
She didn’t.
“Dad hired Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“Internal strategy.”
“When?”
“Fourteen years ago.”
I stood.
“Why didn’t I know?”
“Because he used another surname professionally.”
I stared at her.
“Daniel Mercer is not his real name?”
“It is now.”
“Mom.”
“He was Daniel Carver then.”
The name hit something in my memory.
Carver Strategic.
A boutique advisory group my father used during Sterling Global’s expansion.
I had been twenty-four.
Still learning.
Still spending most days inside finance and compliance.
Daniel might have walked past me a hundred times without becoming important.
“How long did he work with Dad?”
“Eleven months.”
“What happened?”
“He was fired.”
“Why?”
My mother looked toward Rebecca.
Rebecca answered.
“Unauthorized data access.”
Of course.
“What data?”
“Ownership structures.”
“Meridian?”
“Possibly.”
My mind raced backward.
Daniel and I met at a charity dinner ten years earlier.
He told me he worked in corporate operations.
He claimed he had never met my family.
My mother disliked him from the beginning.
I thought she was being controlling.
“You recognized him when I introduced you.”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“And you said nothing.”
“He told us he had changed.”
“He told you?”
My mother’s eyes shifted.
“He approached me before proposing.”
“What?”
“He asked for my blessing.”
I laughed.
No humor.
“He asked the woman who knew he had been fired by my father for accessing confidential records, and you gave him permission to marry me?”
“No.”
That stopped me.
“You didn’t?”
“I told him absolutely not.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he said if I interfered, he would tell you something about your father.”
My anger became colder.
“What?”
She looked away.
“Evelyn.”
Rebecca’s voice was gentle.
“You have to tell her.”
Mom closed her eyes.
“Your father had an affair.”
I said nothing.
“That’s the secret?”
“No.”
She opened her eyes.
“The woman became pregnant.”
The conference room went silent.
I sat down slowly.
“What happened?”
“Your father ended the relationship.”
“Child?”
“Born.”
“Boy or girl?”
“A girl.”
I tried to process having a half sister somewhere.
“Who?”
My mother’s answer barely came out.
“Chloe Ruiz.”
For several seconds, I could hear only the building’s ventilation.
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Chloe is Dad’s daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your father hired him partly to help resolve confidential issues around Chloe’s inheritance rights.”
My stomach turned.
Daniel had known Chloe before me because she was my half sister.
Then later told me she was a consultant.
Then had an affair with her.
Or claimed to.
I didn’t know what anything meant anymore.
“Did Chloe know?”
My mother hesitated.
“I believe she discovered it later.”
“When?”
“Around six years ago.”
Daniel and I had already been married four years.
That timing mattered.
“Did she contact me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She contacted Daniel.”
Of course she did.
“What did she want?”
“My father had left her a confidential settlement.”
“How much?”
“Five million dollars.”
“That isn’t enough to explain any of this.”
“No.”
Mom looked frightened.
“The settlement also included contingent rights connected to Sterling Meridian.”
There it was.
Again.
Meridian.
“What rights?”
“If your father’s line ever lost qualifying control, Chloe could make a claim.”
“My father’s line meaning me?”
“Yes.”
“Lost control how?”
“Death. incapacity. voluntary transfer…”
Rebecca finished:
“Or fraud.”
I stared at the table.
Daniel had been moving money using my signature.
If investigators concluded I authorized it—
“I could be accused of corporate fraud.”
Rebecca nodded.
“And possibly lose qualifying founder status.”
The entire plan sharpened.
Daniel wasn’t simply stealing from me.
He may have been manufacturing evidence that I was the thief.
If I fell, Chloe’s Meridian rights could activate.
Then my phone buzzed.
A video message.
Daniel and Chloe sitting inside a private car.
Chloe no longer wore the bracelet.
Daniel looked into the camera.
“Audrey, stop freezing accounts.”
He paused.
“Because if you force this into public litigation, everyone finds out who Chloe really is.”
Chloe leaned toward the camera.
Her expression wasn’t triumphant.
She looked terrified.
Then she whispered:
“Don’t believe him.”
May you like
Daniel turned toward her.
The video ended.
