Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO BUILT A TRAP FROM HIS DEATHBED

Samuel Vale had known he was dying.
Cancer.
Aggressive.
Private.
Graham rarely spoke about it.
His father spent the final months of his life restructuring trusts and fighting with Everett.
Now Charlotte revealed why.
Samuel suspected his younger brother was stealing from the family businesses.
But he couldn't prove it without forcing Everett to expose himself.
So he built the marriage clause.
I stared.
“The clause wasn't meant to control Graham?”
Charlotte shook her head.
“Not entirely.”
“Then why require marriage?”
“Because Everett believed Graham would never do it.”
Graham's face darkened.
“Dad manipulated me from the grave.”
Charlotte gave a sad smile.
“He was still your father.”
Fair.
Samuel expected Everett to become more aggressive if Graham approached thirty-five unmarried.
The trust would pressure both sides.
Everett would reveal his strategy.
Graham would be forced to examine the legitimate companies more closely.
Then Miles discovered the waterfront fraud earlier than expected.
Everything collapsed.
Samuel's plan became a tragedy.
Graham sat beside the fireplace.
“For four years, I've hated Audrey's father because my family couldn't stop playing games.”
Dad lowered his eyes.
I looked at Graham.
“You were grieving.”
“That doesn't excuse it.”
“No.”
He looked surprised.
Then I continued.
“But you're allowed to understand why you were wrong without pretending you weren't.”
His eyes held mine.
Something warm passed between us.
Then Charlotte handed Graham a sealed letter.
Samuel's handwriting.
For Graham, if Everett challenges the trust.
Graham opened it.
Son,
If you are reading this, I failed to clean up what I should have handled while alive.
Do not confuse family loyalty with obedience.
Graham swallowed.
Your uncle loves control more than he loves us.
If Miles is still alive, trust him.
His hand trembled.
If Miles is gone, do not avenge him until you know who truly deserves blame.
Graham closed his eyes.
Too late.
But not entirely.
Then Samuel's letter mentioned Lennox Manufacturing.
Thomas Lennox is not our enemy.
Dad began crying.
If his daughter ever becomes part of this family, treat her better than we treated him.
I looked toward Graham.
His face broke.
He laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knew about you before I did.”
I almost smiled.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
And Graham, if you marry only to satisfy this trust, do not punish the woman for the prison I built.
Silence.
The wedding night came back to me.
You mean nothing to me, Audrey.
Graham lowered the letter.
His voice was rough.
“I did exactly that.”
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“I'm sorry.”
This time, I believed he understood what he was apologizing for.
Then Rebecca's phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
“Everett has been arrested.”
Graham stood.
“For Miles?”
“Among other allegations.”
Relief moved through the room.
But Rebecca wasn't finished.
“Before his arrest, investigators searched one of his properties.”
I felt cold.
“What did they find?”
“A hidden file on Audrey.”
My stomach tightened.
She continued.
“Photographs. Employment records. Financial history.”
Graham's face darkened.
Then Rebecca added:
May you like
“And a document titled PROJECT EIGHTEEN MONTHS.”
Everett had planned our marriage before Charlotte ever approached me.
