Chapter 4 - The Cold Eviction Notice

"Linda... listen to me," Christopher stammered, his hands trembling violently as he reached out toward the desk. "I can explain... the investment in the logistics firm was guaranteed! I was going to pay the equity loan back before you ever noticed! I did it for us!"
"You did it for yourself," Linda corrected, standing tall behind her desk. "You used my inheritance as collateral for your greed. And when the loan collapsed, you brought your daughter and her husband here to occupy the house, hoping that if they established residence, it would complicate any legal action I took against you."
"Savannah doesn't know about the loan!" Christopher begged, tears of panic finally brimming in his eyes. "She thinks... she thinks I've been managing the estate for years! Please, Linda, if she finds out I lied to her, she'll never speak to me again!"
"She's going to find out a lot more than that, Christopher," Linda said quietly.
At that exact moment, the loud, authoritative chime of the front doorbell echoed through the house, followed by heavy, rhythmic knocking against the oak door.
Out in the hallway, Savannah’s shrill voice rang out: "Who is knocking like that?! Derek, open the door and tell them to wait!"
Linda walked out of her office, brushing past Christopher, who stumbled behind her like a ghost.
When Derek opened the heavy front door, three uniformed officers from the County Sheriff's Department stood on the porch. Beside them stood Marcus Vance, holding a thick leather briefcase, flanked by two private security officers wearing dark suits.
"Are you Derek Miller?" the lead Sheriff's deputy asked sternly, checking a digital clipboard.
Derek blinked, shifting uncomfortably on his feet. "Yeah... I mean, yes, Officer. What's this about?"
Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a document bearing a dark red judicial seal from his briefcase.
"I am Marcus Vance, legal counsel for Linda Miller, sole owner and primary trustee of the Miller Family Heritage Trust," Marcus announced, his voice carrying clearly into every corner of the high-ceilinged foyer. "I am serving you, Savannah Miller, and Derek Miller with an Emergency Ex-Parte Order of Immediate Eviction, a Restraining Order for Domestic Harassment, and a formal Notice of Trespass."
Savannah, who had walked over from the living room holding her tea mug, let out a loud, mocking laugh.
"Eviction?!" Savannah shrieked, pointing her finger at Marcus. "Are you out of your mind?! This is my father's house! Dad, tell these people to get off our porch!"
Christopher stepped out from the hallway, his face ash-gray, avoiding all eye contact with his daughter.
"Dad?" Savannah asked, her smile wavering as she looked at her father’s terrified expression. "Dad, tell them! Show them the deed!"
Marcus Vance pulled out a certified, gold-embossed title document issued by the State Land Registry thirty minutes prior.
"Miss Miller," Marcus said with chilling precision. "Your father has never owned a single square inch of this property. This land was purchased in 1974 by Thomas and Eleanor Miller. It was placed into an irrevocable trust in 1998. Your father signed a legal Quitclaim Waiver eighteen years ago surrendering all future claims to this estate."
Savannah’s mouth stayed open. She turned slowly toward Christopher. "Dad... what is he talking about? You told us you owned the house! You told us you were giving us the west wing!"
Christopher kept his head bowed, staring at the floorboards, completely silent.

"Furthermore," Sheriff Davis interrupted firmly, stepping across the threshold, "per court order, you and your husband have precisely fifteen minutes to gather your personal clothing and exit these premises. Any items brought into this home within the last forty-eight hours—including the furniture on the porch—must remain locked on site pending judicial inventory."
"Fifteen minutes?!" Derek screamed, his posture turning aggressive. "You can't throw us out! We gave up our apartment! We have nowhere to go!"
"Then I suggest you call a hotel, Mr. Miller," Sheriff Davis replied, placing his hand firmly on his sidearm holster. "If you are still on this property in fifteen minutes and one second, you will be placed under arrest for criminal trespassing and defiance of a court order."
"Dad!" Savannah wailed, grabbing Christopher by his shoulders, shaking him violently. "Do something! Tell them they're wrong! Tell them you own this house!"
May you like
Christopher lifted his head slowly, looking at his daughter with eyes full of pure, pathetic shame.
"I don't own it, Savannah," Christopher whispered, his voice cracking. "I never did."
