Chapter 10 - THE EMPIRE I HAD TO OPEN

Daniel Harper's death became a federal matter after investigators connected the financial transactions to the wider trust scheme.
Victor Crane was located in Rhode Island.
He was arrested on charges connected to Grace's assault and unlawful confinement, and investigators questioned him about Daniel's collision and the missing trust funds.
Margaret Finch was also questioned about the manipulated employment records.
She initially claimed she had followed instructions she believed were legitimate.
The payroll documents suggested otherwise.
Meanwhile, Graham Vale hired an expensive team of attorneys and began claiming that Elena was an unstable woman seeking revenge against a respected family.
He also argued that I'd known about the trust's financial arrangements for years.
That accusation frightened my board.
Several directors urged me to settle quietly.
My attorney advised me to preserve all records and avoid public statements that might interfere with the investigation.
I agreed.
But I also made one decision my board hadn't expected.
I appointed independent administrators to review the trust, established a separate process for employee complaints, and authorized investigators to examine my own approvals and communications.
Luca looked at me as though I'd lost my mind.
"You're giving outsiders access to almost everything."
"Yes."
"They could find things you don't want them to find."
"Then perhaps those are exactly the things they need to examine."
He stopped arguing.
The review revealed serious weaknesses in Carter Holdings' oversight.
Not every questionable transaction could be attributed to Graham alone.
Some decisions reflected poor controls I had allowed to continue.
I accepted responsibility for correcting those failures.
The business remained operational, but the trust was placed under independent supervision while the disputed transactions were investigated.
I also stopped allowing household managers to make employment deductions or threaten workers without documented review.
Grace had deserved those protections long before I met her daughters.
One afternoon, she came to my office carrying an envelope.
I stood when she entered.
That seemed to surprise her.
"Mr. Carter."
"Roman."
She hesitated.
"Roman."
It sounded strange coming from her.
I liked it.
She placed the envelope on my desk.
"My resignation."
I stared.
"You're leaving?"
"Yes."
"Because of what happened?"
"Partly."
She looked around the study.
"I've spent eight years working in this house. Right now, I need to build a life where my girls aren't afraid of what happens if their mother misses work."
I wanted to offer her more money.
A better position.
A permanent place on the estate.
Then I remembered what she'd told me at the hospital.
She needed someone to represent her interests, not another wealthy man deciding what was best for her.
So I accepted the letter.
"I understand."
Grace looked relieved.
That hurt a little.
But I preferred her relief to obedience.
Before leaving, she paused at the doorway.
"Thank you for keeping your promise to Mia."
"What promise?"
"That you would tell her the truth."
I smiled faintly.
"I'm trying."
She returned the smile.
Then Luca appeared in the corridor with news from the investigators.
Victor had begun cooperating.
His statement implicated Graham in the assault on Grace, the manipulation of household records, and efforts to conceal Daniel's investigation.
More importantly, Victor had identified the person who arranged the vehicle that struck Daniel.
May you like
Investigators had located the driver.
And the driver was prepared to testify about who had paid him.
