Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO HAD NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE

Gabriel Russo had lost everything.

His organization.

His money.

His sister’s loyalty.

His leverage.

That made him more dangerous than ever.

He called Sofia directly.

“Bring Valentina.”

Sofia’s blood went cold.

“No.”

“She caused this.”

“You caused this.”

Gabriel laughed.

“Still brave.”

“Where’s the counselor?”

“Alive.”

“What do you want?”

“My sister.”

Valentina overheard.

“I’ll go.”

Sofia turned.

“No.”

“He’ll kill that woman.”

“He may kill you.”

Valentina’s expression broke.

“He already took most of my life.”

Sofia looked at the woman she had once believed was Alessandro’s mistress.

She did not forgive everything.

But she no longer saw an enemy.

“I’m coming with you.”

Alessandro objected immediately.

“No.”

Sofia looked at him.

He stopped.

Then exhaled.

“Sorry.”

That mattered.

He tried again.

“I think it is dangerous.”

“It is.”

“I would prefer you not go.”

“I’m going.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he nodded.

“Then we make a plan.”

Growth looked strange on Alessandro Moretti.

But Sofia noticed every inch.

The exchange was set inside an abandoned theater.

Gabriel stood on the stage.

The counselor sat tied nearby.

Valentina walked forward.

Sofia remained ten feet behind.

Gabriel laughed.

“Look at this.”

He looked at Sofia.

“The betrayed wife protecting the mistress.”

Valentina flinched.

Sofia answered calmly.

“She was never his mistress.”

Gabriel’s smile changed.

“No?”

“No.”

“You really believe that?”

Sofia hesitated.

Only for half a second.

Gabriel saw it.

“That’s the problem with lies, Sofia.”

His voice turned soft.

“Even after someone tells you the truth, the lie stays.”

The words hit.

Because he was right.

Trust did not return because evidence appeared.

It had to be rebuilt.

Gabriel pulled a gun.

Federal teams moved outside.

Alessandro watched through a hidden camera.

Valentina stepped closer.

“Let the woman go.”

“Come with me.”

“No.”

“You owe me.”

“I owe my son a mother who finally stops being afraid of you.”

Gabriel’s face twisted.

He raised the gun.

Sofia moved.

So did Valentina.

The counselor dropped sideways.

A shot exploded.

Valentina screamed.

Gabriel fell.

A federal sniper had hit his shoulder.

Agents stormed the theater.

Within seconds, he was arrested.

Alive.

Valentina collapsed.

Sofia ran to her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Then Valentina started laughing through tears.

“What?”

Sofia asked.

“He missed.”

Sofia laughed too.

Hours later, after everyone was safe, Valentina gave Sofia a small envelope.

“I should’ve given you this before.”

Inside was a letter from Alessandro.

Written seven months earlier.

Before the staged affair began.

Sofia opened it.

If this plan hurts Sofia, end it. I don’t care what it costs.

She looked at Valentina.

“What happened?”

Valentina looked ashamed.

“I convinced him we had to continue.”

“Why?”

“Because Gabriel was close to discovering Matteo.”

Sofia stopped breathing.

“You knew then?”

Valentina nodded.

“Alessandro didn’t.”

Sofia stared at the letter.

For the first time, she realized Alessandro had not chosen the deception because it was easy.

May you like

He had tried to stop it.

And someone else had persuaded him that continuing was the only way to protect her stolen son.
