Chapter 3 - MADISON'S REAL JOB

By sunrise, three attorneys were in Walter’s room.
At 7:40, two members of Caldwell Holdings’ board arrived.
At 8:05, Ethan finally appeared.
His tie was crooked.
His hair looked as though he had repeatedly dragged his hands through it.
For the first time in years, Ethan Caldwell did not enter a room looking like the man in charge.
He looked like a man chasing something he had already lost.
He saw Norah first.
Then Lily.
Then his father.
“Why is everyone here?”
Walter did not answer.
One of the attorneys closed the door.
Ethan looked at Norah.
“I need to speak with you privately.”
“No.”
“It’s important.”
“So is this.”
“Norah.”
Walter slammed his palm against the bedside table.
“She said no.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Dad, you don’t understand what’s happening.”
Walter laughed without humor.
“That sentence stopped working when you were twelve.”
Ethan’s face reddened.
The attorney, Miriam Shaw, opened a leather folder.
“Ethan, as of 6:45 this morning, Walter revoked every financial power of attorney previously granted to you.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
“He has also suspended your proxy authority over his voting shares pending a forensic review.”
“You can’t do that.”
Walter raised one eyebrow.
“They’re my shares.”
Ethan turned toward Norah.
“This is you.”
She almost admired the reflex.
Even now, faced with his affair, his father’s suspicion and Madison’s deception, Ethan needed someone else to blame.
“No,” Norah said. “This is what happens when people finally stop carrying you.”
His jaw tightened.
“Madison accessed my email.”
“You gave her access?”
“No.”
Lily spoke.
“You gave her your password.”
Ethan looked at his daughter.
“What?”
“I heard you tell her in the kitchen.”
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“She needed to print something.”
Walter stared at his son in disbelief.
“You gave a woman from Vale Strategic Partners access to a Caldwell Holdings executive account?”
“She told me she left Vale.”
“And you believed her?”
Ethan snapped.
“I was sleeping with her, Dad. I wasn’t conducting a background investigation.”
The room went silent.
Even Ethan seemed shocked by his own words.
Lily’s face crumpled.
Norah stood.
“Don’t ever say something like that in front of her again.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart—”
“Don’t.”
Lily moved closer to Norah.
That hurt him.
Norah saw it.
Part of her wanted it to.
Miriam slid another document across the table.
“We pulled remote-access logs.”
Ethan stared.
“From what?”
“Your corporate account.”
He read.
His face changed.
“What is this?”
“Someone logged into your account at 11:38 p.m. last Thursday.”
“I was at dinner.”
“With Madison?” Norah asked.
Ethan said nothing.
Miriam continued.
“The login downloaded three confidential appraisal reports, the pending rezoning analysis and two letters of acquisition interest.”
Walter closed his eyes.
“How much exposure?”
“Potentially enormous.”
Ethan looked sick.
“I didn’t download those.”
“No,” Miriam said. “But your credentials did.”
His phone rang.
MADISON.
Everyone saw the name.
Ethan stared at it.
Walter said, “Answer.”
Ethan hesitated.
“Put her on speaker,” Norah said.
He answered.
“Madison?”
“Where are you?”
Her voice sounded angry.
Not frightened.
“Harbor Ridge.”
A pause.
“With your father?”
“Yes.”
“Leave.”
Ethan looked around the room.
“What?”
“Right now.”
“Why?”
“Because anything they ask you to sign is designed to trap you.”
Walter smiled coldly.
“Hello, Madison.”
Silence.
Then:
“Walter.”
“You sound disappointed I’m conscious.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Madison recovered quickly.
“This is a family matter.”
Walter laughed.
“You tried to make me sign away four hundred million dollars while I was on Parkinson’s medication.”
“That’s defamatory.”
“So sue me.”
Norah watched Ethan.
Every second of that call stripped something from his face.
Denial.
Confidence.
Fantasy.
Madison’s polished voice no longer sounded seductive.
It sounded calculated.
Ethan finally spoke.
“Did you access my email?”
“What?”
“Answer me.”
“You’re panicking.”
“Did you?”
“Ethan, don’t let them turn us against each other.”
Norah looked at Lily.
Lily quietly pulled out her phone.
Recording.
Smart girl.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“You told me you left Vale.”
“I did.”
“My father’s investigators say you didn’t.”
Another pause.
“Your father spies on everyone.”
“Did you download the harbor files?”
Madison’s voice hardened.
“You need to leave that room.”
“Did you?”
“Ethan.”
“Did you?”
The silence lasted too long.
Then Madison said:
“You told me you wanted out.”
Norah’s stomach tightened.
Ethan stared at the phone.
“Out of what?”
“Your father controlling you.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“You said you were tired of begging him for authority.”
Walter’s face remained unreadable.
“You said Norah made you feel like a guest in your own family.”
Norah felt the words hit.
Ethan looked at her.
Shame crossed his face.
Madison continued.
“You said once the baby came, everyone would treat Norah like the center of the universe and you’d disappear.”
Lily stared at her father.
Ethan whispered, “Stop.”
“You wanted your life back.”
“I said stop.”
“And I gave you a way.”
Miriam leaned toward the phone.
“What way, Ms. Vale?”
Madison went silent.
Then she laughed softly.
“So the lawyers are there.”
Ethan’s hands began trembling.
“Madison, what did you do?”
Her answer came quietly.
“Nothing you didn’t authorize.”
The line disconnected.
Ethan immediately tried to call back.
Her phone was off.
Miriam stood.
“We need to freeze every account requiring Ethan’s credentials.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You think she moved money?”
“We’re going to find out.”
They found out fourteen minutes later.
Caldwell Holdings’ chief financial officer called.
A transfer had been initiated at 12:03 a.m.
Four million eight hundred thousand dollars.
Destination:
an escrow account in Delaware.
Authorized electronically by Ethan Caldwell.
Ethan’s face turned white.
“I didn’t do that.”
The CFO said something on speaker.
Miriam’s expression changed.
“What?”
Norah asked.
Miriam looked at Ethan.
“The transfer wasn’t the only authorization.”
“What else?”
She turned the laptop toward them.
On the screen was a signed letter of intent.
It gave Vale Strategic Partners exclusive negotiating rights to purchase the harbor property.
At the bottom was Ethan’s electronic signature.
Walter stared at his son.
Ethan stared at the screen.
May you like
And Lily whispered:
“Dad... what did you let her do?”
