Chapter 3 - The Man in the Basement

Nobody believed Madeline at first.
Not even Alexander.
Especially Alexander.
His father had been buried three years earlier.
There had been a funeral attended by senators, governors, celebrities, business leaders, and nearly everyone who mattered in the city.
Richard Whitmore's death certificate existed.
Doctors had signed it.
His ashes had supposedly been placed inside the Whitmore family mausoleum.
Yet Madeline was trembling in the back of a black sedan saying Richard Whitmore was alive.
Alexander leaned closer.
“Madeline, Dad died three years ago.”
She shook her head violently.
“No.”
“You saw him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
Jonathan whispered, “That's impossible.”
Madeline screamed.
“You brought me to him!”
Every eye turned toward Jonathan.
He stepped backward.
“I never brought you anywhere.”
“You came at night.”
Jonathan's face changed.
Madeline pointed at him.
“You told me Alexander had remarried. You said he didn't want me anymore.”
Alexander looked crushed.
“I thought you were dead.”
Madeline started sobbing.
“I asked you to call him.”
She stared at Jonathan.
“You said he knew I was alive.”
Alexander's voice broke.
“I didn't.”
“I know that now.”
Jonathan rubbed both hands over his face.
“I visited her, yes.”
Alexander exploded.
“You told my wife I abandoned her?”
“I was trying to keep her calm.”
“You convinced her I chose another woman!”
“Because Mom said if Madeline tried to leave, she would finish what she started!”
That confession silenced everyone.
Jonathan looked horrified that he'd said it.
Dante stepped closer.
“So you kept her imprisoned to protect her?”
Jonathan's laugh was hollow.
“You think I wanted any of this?”
Alexander said, “You could have told me.”
“I couldn't trust you.”
“Why?”
Jonathan looked directly at him.
“Because Mom had convinced everyone around you that Madeline was dead. Doctors. Lawyers. Police. Private security. If I suddenly brought her back, Mom would've known exactly who helped her.”
“So you did nothing for three years?”
“No.”
Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.
“I kept her alive.”
For the first time, Alexander hesitated.
Jonathan continued.
“St. Catherine's was supposed to be temporary. Then Madeline woke up with severe memory loss. She remembered pieces, not everything. Mom wanted her transferred overseas.”
Madeline whispered, “Switzerland.”
Jonathan nodded.
“I stopped it.”
Alexander's fury didn't disappear, but confusion entered it.
“Why did Vanessa pretend to be pregnant?”
Jonathan glanced toward her.
Vanessa stood by the sedan, hugging herself.
“Mom needed an heir she could control.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Eleanor approached me before Alexander proposed.”
Alexander turned.
“She arranged our marriage?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“She knew you were lonely. She knew I was desperate.”
“For what?”
“My father's company was bankrupt.”
Alexander stared.
“My marriage was a business arrangement?”
“To Eleanor, yes.”
Vanessa began crying.
“But not entirely to me.”
Alexander looked away.
She continued anyway.
“I did care about you.”
“You wore a fake pregnancy belly for eight months.”
“I know.”
“And while my real wife was imprisoned.”
“I didn't know she was alive when I married you.”
Alexander looked back at her.
Vanessa swallowed.
“I learned six months ago.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Cynthia threatened my father.”
Vanessa explained that Eleanor and Cynthia had quietly acquired enough debt from her family's failing company to destroy it instantly.
If Vanessa spoke, hundreds of employees would lose their jobs.
If she cooperated, Eleanor would erase the debt.
“So you agreed to fake a pregnancy?”
“At first, yes.”
Alexander shook his head.
“You could have come to me.”
“I didn't know whether you were involved.”
That hurt him.
Madeline shifted beneath the blanket.
Dante crouched near her.
“You said Richard is alive.”
She nodded weakly.
“Where?”
“The lake.”
Whitmore Lake Estate.
Alexander stood.
“We're going there.”
Madeline grabbed him.
“No.”
He froze.
“She'll kill him.”
“Who?”
“Eleanor.”
Dante's expression hardened.
“Then we move fast.”
Police were already coming to St. Catherine's.
Dante insisted Madeline travel in an ambulance with an independent physician.
Alexander rode with her.
Jonathan wanted to go.
Madeline refused.
So Jonathan remained in our SUV.
We reached Whitmore Lake just before midnight.
The property looked abandoned from the road.
A massive stone mansion sat behind old pine trees overlooking frozen water.
No lights.
No visible cars.
But Dante's security team found fresh tire tracks near the service entrance.
The front door was unlocked.
That bothered Dante.
“Too easy.”
We entered carefully.
The interior smelled like dust and wood smoke.
Lily remained outside in a protected vehicle this time.
I wasn't negotiating.
Alexander had asked me to help because I understood security systems.
The mansion's original alarms had supposedly been disconnected years ago.
They hadn't.
Someone had installed new motion sensors inside antique fixtures.
We disabled them.
Then we found a hidden elevator behind the library.
Jonathan stared at it.
“I didn't know this existed.”
Alexander pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
I examined the keypad.
“Biometric.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Try mine.”
It rejected him.
Alexander placed his thumb against the reader.
Green light.
The elevator opened.
Jonathan looked surprised.
“Dad programmed you.”
We descended.
One floor.
Then two.
When the doors opened, we found a private medical suite beneath the mansion.
Hospital bed.
Oxygen equipment.
Cardiac monitors.
Medication cabinets.
And photographs.
Dozens of photographs of Alexander and Jonathan as children.
On the far wall hung a photograph of Richard Whitmore holding both boys beside the lake.
Alexander touched it.
“Dad?”
A sound came from behind a closed door.
A weak cough.
Alexander rushed forward.
Dante caught his shoulder.
“Slow.”
He opened the door.
An elderly man lay in a hospital bed.
He had lost weight.
His silver hair was longer.
A scar crossed one side of his face.
But Alexander recognized him instantly.
“Dad.”
Richard Whitmore opened his eyes.
For several seconds, father and son simply stared at each other.
Then Richard began crying.
“Alex.”

Alexander collapsed beside the bed.
“You're alive.”
Richard reached for him.
“I tried to get back to you.”
Jonathan appeared in the doorway.
Richard saw him.
His expression changed.
“Jonathan.”
Jonathan started crying.
“Dad.”
Richard looked between his sons.
“Where is your mother?”
Alexander whispered, “Not here.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Then we don't have much time.”
Dante stepped inside.
“What happened three years ago?”
Richard struggled to sit up.
“My wife poisoned me.”
Alexander turned white.
Richard continued.
“Not enough to kill me immediately. Enough to cause cardiac arrest.”
“Why?”
“I found the accounts.”
The same missing money Vanessa had mentioned.
“Eleanor had been stealing from Whitmore Industries for more than fifteen years.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“How?”
“Charitable foundations. Vendor contracts. Real estate holding companies.”
Richard looked at Alexander.
“I was preparing to expose her.”
“What happened?”
“I told Madeline.”
Alexander swallowed.
“That's why Mom targeted her.”
Richard nodded.
“She had copies of everything.”
Dante asked, “How did Eleanor fake your death?”
Richard gave a weak laugh.
“Money makes impossible things surprisingly easy.”
He explained that after collapsing, he woke inside a private ambulance.
A doctor Eleanor had bribed declared him dead publicly.
Another body was cremated.
Richard was transported to the lake estate because Eleanor needed him alive.
“Why?”
Alexander asked.
Richard stared toward the ceiling.
“Because some Whitmore assets require my biometric authorization every five years.”
Dante understood immediately.
“She couldn't kill you until she'd moved everything.”
Richard nodded.
“The final transfer is tomorrow.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“What transfer?”
Richard looked at him.
“Forty-eight percent of Whitmore Industries.”
Alexander froze.
“To whom?”
Richard whispered, “A private trust.”
“Controlled by Mom?”
“No.”
Richard looked terrified.
“Controlled by the child.”
Alexander's stomach dropped.
“What child?”
Richard turned toward him.
“The unborn Whitmore heir.”
Nobody spoke.
Alexander shook his head.
“Vanessa's pregnancy is fake.”
Richard stared.
“What?”
“And Madeline is pregnant.”
Richard's entire expression changed.
“Madeline?”
“She's alive.”
Richard tried to get out of bed.
Alexander stopped him.
“She's safe.”
Richard gripped his son's arm.
“How far along?”
“About seven months.”
Richard looked toward Jonathan.
Something in his expression made me uneasy.
“No.”
Jonathan whispered, “Dad?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“The pregnancy wasn't supposed to happen.”
Alexander stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Richard looked at Dante.
“Lock the door.”
Dante did.
Richard lowered his voice.
“Eleanor didn't keep Madeline alive only because of the documents.”
Alexander whispered, “Then why?”
Richard looked directly at him.
“Because she needed Madeline to produce the real Whitmore heir.”
Jonathan backed away.
Alexander shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“It will.”
May you like
He looked at his two sons.
“Because only one of you is actually mine.”
