Chapter 10 - VANESSA LEARNED THE REAL STORY FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THE CEREMONY

Vanessa asked for a private room.

I agreed only because the boys went with Daniel and Helen.

She closed the door.

“How much did you know?”

I frowned.

“About what?”

“The fertility records.”

I became still.

She knew something.

Vanessa sat down.

“Ryan told me your marriage ended because you couldn’t have children and became obsessed with treatment.”

“He lied.”

“I know that now.”

“How?”

She looked toward the hallway.

“His mother told me the boys were conceived after you slept with someone else.”

My stomach turned.

Even after DNA confirmation.

Even after formal child support.

Rebecca still needed me to be the woman who failed.

“What did Ryan tell you?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“That paternity was legally established, but he said fertility treatment made things complicated.”

“That sentence means nothing.”

“I know.”

Then I told her.

Not every detail.

Enough.

My endometriosis.

Ryan’s male-factor diagnosis.

His private request not to disclose his results to me.

Rebecca’s clinic contact.

The three 99.99% paternity tests.

Vanessa stared.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“For years?”

“Yes.”

She stood.

Walked to the window.

Then:

“He told me he left because he finally accepted he deserved a family.”

I said nothing.

“He already had one coming.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Then she looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Why would I?”

That landed.

I was not responsible for pre-screening Ryan’s future brides.

Then she asked the hardest question.

“Does he see them?”

“Sometimes.”

“Sometimes?”

I explained the canceled visits.

New York.

Gifts.

Recent attempts to rebuild contact.

Vanessa’s face changed with every sentence.

Then the wedding coordinator knocked.

Five minutes.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I need to talk to him.”

I stood.

“This is your decision.”

She looked at me.

“You really don’t want him back.”

For the first time that morning, I laughed.

“No.”

That apparently mattered to her.

Outside, the triplets sat on a bench eating crackers.

Ryan stood several feet away.

He looked destroyed.

Vanessa walked past everyone and said:

“Ryan. Private room. Now.”

Rebecca tried to follow.

Vanessa turned.

“No.”

Rebecca stopped.

The bride entered.

The groom followed.

The door closed.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Guests began whispering.

At minute fifteen, the wedding coordinator looked panicked.

Then Vanessa came out alone.

No veil.

No bouquet.

She looked at the gathered family.

“The wedding is delayed.”

Rebecca whispered:

“Vanessa…”

Then Vanessa said:

“Possibly indefinitely.”

Ryan remained inside.

And the three children he had kept at the edge of his life were not what destroyed the wedding.

The truth he had withheld from the woman at the altar did.
