Chapter 10 - THE GROOM'S REAL REASON

Ashley didn't cry when she saw the photograph.

She became very still.

That scared me more.

"When did Ryan meet Patrick?" she whispered.

Nobody answered.

Patrick smiled faintly.

That was enough.

Dad lunged toward him.

Thomas blocked him.

"Don't."

Patrick buttoned his coat.

"This melodrama is exhausting."

I stepped between him and the door.

"Sit down."

He laughed.

"You don't give me orders."

"Then leave. But Marcus will preserve every security recording, Benjamin will notify the trustee, and every document you brought will be examined."

Patrick's eyes hardened.

"And?"

"And Ryan will learn you left him holding the bag."

That worked.

Tiny movement.

Almost nothing.

But enough.

Ashley saw it too.

She stood.

"What did you promise him?"

Patrick said nothing.

"WHAT DID YOU PROMISE HIM?"

His silence answered more than words.

Ryan had met Patrick months earlier.

We discovered how through Ashley's phone.

The first contact came after Ashley posted engagement photographs publicly.

Patrick messaged Ryan using another name.

He claimed to be a distant family adviser.

Over time, he fed Ryan information.

Grandma's estate.

Possible inheritances.

Property.

Trust assets.

And, most importantly, me.

Ryan learned I was financially successful.

He learned I'd arranged the venue.

He learned our parents could be manipulated through Ashley.

Patrick wanted access to the family again without exposing himself too early.

Ryan became his bridge.

"What did Ryan get?" I asked.

Patrick shrugged.

"Opportunity."

Ashley laughed without humor.

"You mean money."

Patrick didn't deny it.

Ryan had been promised a percentage if Patrick successfully challenged Grandma's estate.

He had encouraged Ashley's extravagant wedding expectations because every new expense created pressure.

Pressure on our parents.

Pressure on me.

Pressure that might expose documents and force access to Grandma's trust.

The wedding was bait.

I looked at Ashley.

She looked devastated.

But then she asked the question that mattered.

"Did you know I'd throw Eleanor out?"

Patrick smiled.

"No. That was entirely you."

The truth hit harder than any conspiracy.

Patrick manipulated circumstances.

But Ashley had humiliated me voluntarily.

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

I respected her for saying it.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

Ryan walked in.

Apparently someone had told him Patrick was here.

He saw Ashley.

Stopped.

"Ash—"

She removed her engagement ring.

Ryan held up both hands.

"I can explain."

Ashley walked toward him.

For one terrifying second I thought she might slap him.

Instead, she placed the ring gently in his palm.

"You liked the wedding."

"Ashley—"

"You liked the estate."

"That's not fair."

"You liked my sister's money."

His face changed.

"That's not—"

"And I liked pretending it was mine."

That silenced him.

Ashley stepped backward.

"So maybe we deserved to find each other."

Then she turned away.

Ryan looked toward Patrick.

"Tell them."

Patrick frowned.

"Tell us what?" I asked.

Ryan swallowed.

"Patrick didn't come back only for the inheritance."

Patrick snapped, "Shut up."

Ryan continued.

"He found something when he tracked the old cabin sale."

"What?"

"A mineral-rights reservation."

Benjamin looked confused.

Ryan explained.

When my parents sold Grandma's cabin, they transferred the land.

But due to an error in the paperwork, certain subsurface mineral rights remained with Evelyn's estate.

The mining company that later purchased the property had recently discovered it.

They wanted those rights cleared.

I asked the only question that mattered.

"How much are they worth?"

Ryan looked at Patrick.

Then at me.

"The company offered eight million dollars."

Even Patrick stopped smiling.

And according to Grandma's final trust, control of those rights didn't belong to my parents.

It didn't belong to Patrick.

It didn't even belong equally to Ashley and me.

Benjamin read the clause twice.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Eleanor, your grandmother left controlling authority to you."
