Chapter 2 - The Gala Built on a Lie

Ethan did not open the door immediately.

He checked Lily first.

Still asleep.

Then he called hotel security from his personal phone rather than the room line.

"Send someone to employee suite eleven-B."

A pause.

"May I ask who's calling?"

"Ethan Vance."

The response changed instantly.

"Mr. Vance?"

"Now."

Two security officers arrived within three minutes.

Only then did Ethan open the door.

Nathan's assistant, Colin Reeves, stood outside.

His confident expression vanished when he saw security.

"Mr. Vance."

"You said my brother wants to speak with me."

"He's downstairs."

"Then he can wait."

Colin glanced at Lupita.

Something about that look bothered Ethan.

"Do you know Ms. Alvarez?" Ethan asked.

"No."

Lupita stiffened.

Ethan noticed.

"Interesting."

Colin tried to smile.

"I simply came to escort you to the gala."

"I don't need an escort inside my own hotel."

The security officers exchanged looks.

Colin left.

The moment the elevator doors closed, Ethan turned to Lupita.

"You know him."

She nodded.

"He fired my niece."

"From this hotel?"

"Accounting."

"When?"

"Four months ago."

"Why?"

"She found something."

Ethan felt the night shifting beneath his feet again.

"What?"

"Payments."

"To Sable Ridge?"

Lupita nodded.

Her niece, Sofia Alvarez, had worked in accounts payable.

She noticed multiple consulting invoices containing identical descriptions but different amounts.

Market expansion advisory.

Operational restructuring.

Executive risk management.

Millions of dollars.

When Sofia questioned them, Warren Caldwell told her they were approved at the highest level.

She continued asking.

Two weeks later, she was fired for "performance deficiencies."

"Where is she now?"

"Milwaukee."

"Can she prove any of this?"

"She copied the invoice numbers."

Ethan called his private attorney, Claire Donovan.

Not company counsel.

His attorney.

He told her to quietly begin preserving financial records.

Then he asked one question.

"Claire, who owns Sable Ridge Consulting?"

"I'll find out."

"Tonight."

She heard something in his voice.

"What's happening?"

"I don't know yet."

He looked at Lily.

"But somebody used my daughter to make sure I noticed."

That realization had been growing since the knock.

Why place him in employee housing?

Why reveal Suite 904?

Why let Lupita find him?

Maybe it was coincidence.

Or maybe someone wanted Ethan away from the gala long enough to discover something.

At 7:15, Lily woke.

"Daddy, are we going to the fancy party?"

"You remember?"

"You said there'd be chocolate cake."

There were moments when being a CEO became irrelevant.

This was one.

"Then we definitely have to go."

Lupita offered to stay with Lily.

Ethan considered it.

"No. She's coming with me."

He no longer trusted the building enough to leave her behind.

Lupita found Lily a small hairbrush.

Ethan straightened her travel dress.

The roses remained in their vase beside the bed.

As they entered the ballroom, conversations stopped in waves.

Ethan Vance rarely attended company galas anymore.

Since Sarah's death, Nathan had become the public face of Vance Meridian.

Employees recognized Ethan from annual reports.

Investors recognized him immediately.

Nathan recognized Lily.

His face tightened.

Then he smiled.

Big.

Public.

Brotherly.

"Ethan!"

He crossed the ballroom with both arms open.

"You made it."

Ethan did not hug him.

"I did."

Nathan glanced at Lily.

"You brought Lily."

"She's my daughter."

"Of course."

Something about the response was wrong.

Nathan crouched.

"Hey, princess."

Lily moved behind Ethan's leg.

Children sometimes understood people before adults allowed themselves to.

Nathan stood.

"Can we talk privately?"

"After the gala."

"This can't wait."

"Neither could my reservation."

Nathan's smile froze.

"What?"

"Suite 904."

For half a second, fear appeared.

Then disappeared.

"I heard there was a mix-up."

"You heard quickly."

"Warren called me."

"Before or after your assistant found me upstairs?"

Nathan lowered his voice.

"Ethan, don't do this here."

"Do what?"

"Create a scene."

Ethan almost laughed.

The same phrase Sarah used to hate.

People accused of wrongdoing often became very concerned about scenes.

Before Nathan could continue, Warren Caldwell approached.

He looked exactly like the photographs in management reports.

Silver hair.

Custom tuxedo.

Perfect smile.

"Mr. Vance. I sincerely apologize for the reservation error."

"Who is staying in 904?"

Warren's smile weakened.

"A corporate guest."

"Name."

Nathan interrupted.

"Ethan."

"Name."

Warren swallowed.

"Daniel Mercer."

Ethan watched Nathan.

His brother's face remained controlled.

"Why?"

"Mr. Mercer required privacy."

"So you canceled my confirmed reservation."

"We believed you weren't arriving until tomorrow."

Ethan stared.

"Who told you that?"

Warren looked at Nathan.

There it was.

Small.

Automatic.

But Ethan saw it.

Nathan had given the instruction.

"I think Lily wants cake," Ethan said.

Nathan blinked.

"What?"

"Lily."

His daughter was still holding his hand.

Ethan smiled down at her.

"Chocolate?"

She nodded.

He took her toward the dessert table.

He wanted Nathan confused.

People made mistakes when they believed they had lost control of the conversation.

Ten minutes later, Claire called.

Ethan stepped into a quiet hallway while Lily ate cake with Lupita nearby.

"I found Sable Ridge."

"Who owns it?"

"That's complicated."

"Make it simple."

"The registered owner is a Delaware holding company."

"Who owns that?"

"Another LLC."

"And eventually?"

Claire paused.

"Nathan."

Ethan closed his eyes.

His brother had approved millions in company payments to a business he secretly controlled.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

Sable Ridge had purchased three residential properties.

One in Lake Forest.

One in Miami.

One outside Denver.

Denver.

Ethan's home.

"What's the address?"

Claire gave it.

Ethan knew the neighborhood.

Ten minutes from Lily's school.

His skin went cold.

"Who lives there?"

"We're checking."

"Do it now."

When he returned to the ballroom, Nathan was giving a speech.

"Family is the foundation of everything we've built."

Applause.

Ethan stood at the back holding Lily.

Family.

Nathan continued.

"And tonight, I'm honored to announce a major new chapter for Vance Meridian."

A screen illuminated behind him.

VANCE MERIDIAN - THE NEXT GENERATION.

Ethan had approved no announcement.

Nathan smiled.

"Beginning next quarter, our group will enter a strategic partnership with Sable Ridge Consulting."

Ethan felt something almost like disbelief.

Nathan was publicly bringing his own shell company deeper into Vance Meridian.

Then Nathan continued.

"And with the support of our board, we will begin a leadership transition designed to secure this company's future."

Now Ethan understood.

This gala was not a celebration.

It was a coup.

His phone vibrated.

Claire.

He answered quietly.

"We identified the Denver property occupant."

"Who?"

A pause.

"A woman named Rebecca Shaw."

Ethan stopped breathing.

He knew that name.

Rebecca had been Sarah's oncology nurse during the final six months of her life.

"Why is Nathan buying her a house?"

Claire's next sentence made Ethan grip the wall.

"There's a child registered at the address."

"What child?"

"A seven-year-old boy."

Ethan looked across the ballroom at his brother.

Nathan was smiling beneath the lights.

"Name?"

"Caleb Shaw."

"Father?"

"The birth certificate leaves that field blank."

Ethan's heart pounded.

Then Claire added:

"Ethan, Rebecca has been receiving monthly payments from Sable Ridge for three years."

May you like

Three years.

Exactly since Sarah died.
