Chapter 6 - THE MERGER WAS A TRAP

The first contraction came four minutes later.

The second came seven minutes after that.

Julian had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without raising his voice.

He had faced hostile boards, lawsuits and market crashes.

None of it prepared him for watching Elena breathe through pain inside a locked underground vault.

“We need to get out.”

Dante was already removing the ventilation cover.

“The shaft is too narrow.”

“For her?”

“For anyone.”

Evelyn opened an emergency cabinet.

An old landline.

Dead.

“Someone cut the vault communication before trapping us,” she said.

Julian looked toward the ceiling camera.

“Can they see us?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Probably.”

Elena inhaled sharply.

Julian knelt beside her.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“We’re getting out.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know.”

A faint smile touched her mouth.

“You still lie badly.”

He almost laughed.

Then the contractions slowed.

Not active labor yet.

Her water breaking still changed everything.

Six weeks early.

They needed a hospital.

Dante finally found a manual hydraulic release behind a maintenance panel.

It required pressure from the outside.

No use.

Then Elena remembered the housekeeping radio.

Her uniform remained upstairs.

But in the pocket of the coat she had borrowed was a small hotel emergency tag Evelyn had given her weeks earlier.

A silent staff panic button.

She pressed it.

Nothing happened.

“Signal can’t penetrate steel,” Dante said.

Evelyn looked toward the ventilation shaft.

“Put it inside.”

Dante attached the tag to his belt, climbed onto the desk and pushed his arm deep into the shaft.

One bar appeared.

Then two.

The tag blinked.

Upstairs, an alarm triggered.

Seven minutes later, the hydraulic lock groaned.

The vault opened.

Hotel security stood outside.

And behind them was Camila.

Her forehead was bandaged.

Her dress torn.

Julian stared.

“You’re alive.”

“Barely.”

Dante grabbed her arm.

“Who brought you?”

“I escaped.”

“From whom?”

“Marco’s driver.”

She looked at Elena.

Then at the floor.

“Oh my God.”

Julian snapped into motion.

“Hospital.”

Camila blocked him.

“Not Rossi Medical.”

“We know.”

“No, Julian. You don’t.”

She pulled a USB drive from inside her coat.

“The merger vote was moved.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Julian froze.

“It’s scheduled for tomorrow.”

“Not anymore.”

“Who authorized it?”

“Your electronic signature.”

Again.

The stolen credentials.

Camila continued.

“If the board approves tonight, Halcyon funds at midnight.”

“And Schedule Nine?”

“They attached your waiver.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“A waiver obtained through fraud.”

“They don’t care if they can close before anyone gets an injunction.”

Julian looked at Elena.

Her child could be born any day.

Possibly any hour.

The timing was not coincidence.

“They need the merger closed before the baby is legally recorded.”

“Yes.”

Camila handed him the USB.

“I copied this from Marco’s laptop.”

“What is it?”

“Internal messages.”

Julian plugged it into Evelyn’s secure computer upstairs.

One folder.

PROJECT LEGACY.

Emails appeared.

Marco.

Stefano.

Dr. Wells.

A Halcyon attorney.

Then a fourth name.

B. ROSSI.

Julian’s heart stopped.

Bianca.

His mother.

Elena looked away.

“Open it.”

Messages.

Some from years earlier.

Some recent.

One from Bianca:

ELENA SUSPECTS NOTHING. I WILL HANDLE HER.

Julian stopped breathing.

Another:

JULIAN CANNOT KNOW ABOUT THE PREGNANCY UNTIL THE MERGER CLOSES.

Then a response from Stefano:

IF SHE REFUSES TO LEAVE, WELLS WILL PREPARE THE MEDICAL RECORD.

Camila whispered:

“The miscarriage.”

Julian felt physically ill.

Then Bianca’s next message appeared.

NO. I AGREED TO FRIGHTEN HER. I WILL NOT ALLOW PHYSICAL HARM.

Stefano answered:

THAT DECISION IS NO LONGER YOURS.

Julian closed his eyes.

His mother had betrayed Elena.

But perhaps not as completely as he thought.

Another email came from Marco.

THE ALCazar PLAN REMAINS AVAILABLE IF SHE RESURFACES.

Stefano:

USE IT ONLY IF JULIAN SEES HER.

Julian stared.

“They planned tonight months ago.”

Camila nodded.

“The housekeeping contractor was bought by a Rossi shell company three months ago.”

Elena went pale.

“They knew where I worked.”

“Yes.”

“They let me stay there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dante answered.

“To watch the pregnancy.”

Elena covered her stomach.

Julian’s fury became cold.

Pure.

“Board meeting. Where?”

“Rossi Tower.”

“What time?”

“Seven.”

He checked the clock.

4:18 p.m.

Elena grabbed his sleeve.

“You’re not leaving me.”

He looked at her.

For eight months, every powerful person around Elena had decided what she needed without asking her.

He would not repeat it.

“What do you want?”

She breathed through another contraction.

“I want the baby safe.”

“Yes.”

“I want the merger stopped.”

“Yes.”

“And I want them to see me.”

Julian stared.

“Elena—”

“They erased my pregnancy.”

Her eyes hardened.

“They made me disappear.”

Another contraction tightened her face, but she did not look away.

“I am done disappearing.”

Evelyn smiled slowly.

“That sounds like a Rossi.”

Elena looked at her.

“No.”

May you like

She touched her stomach.

“That is exactly what I’m trying not to become.”
