Chapter 4 - THE VAULT BENEATH STERLING TOWER

:
Sterling Tower had been closed to the public since my father's “death.”
For six years, no employee entered the top three floors.
No maintenance crew.
No security staff.
Nothing.
My father led us through a private underground entrance.
The doors opened only after my ring touched a biometric scanner.
A green light appeared.
STERLING BLOODLINE VERIFIED.
The words made my stomach twist.
We descended twenty floors beneath the building.
Clara stayed beside me.
Maya held both babies for several minutes before my father took one.
I noticed how carefully he supported the newborn's head.
The gesture surprised me.
“Did you ever hold me like that?”
He looked at me.
“When you were born.”
“You remember?”
“Every second.”
“Then why did you become this?”
He didn't answer.
We reached the vault.
A massive steel door opened.
Inside were thousands of boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Ledgers.
My father's entire hidden history.
He walked to the center table.
“Here.”
He placed a small black recorder down.
“This is what your grandfather never wanted anyone to hear.”
He pressed play.
My grandfather's voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, the family has already betrayed itself.”
I stood completely still.
“My son Alexander believes he can protect his children by controlling the empire.”
A pause.
“He is wrong.”
The recording continued.
“The real threat is Eleanor.”
My grandmother.
“She believes the Sterling bloodline belongs to her.”
Another pause.
“She has manipulated the family for thirty years.”
I looked at my father.
He didn't move.
“She arranged the death of Marcus Hale.”
The man who had mentored my father.
“She arranged the disappearance of Lucia.”
Clara's mother.
“She ordered the disappearance of Clara.”
I looked at my sister.
Tears filled her eyes.
“She believed the girl carried information the trust required.”
My grandfather's voice became weaker.
“But she made one mistake.”
The tape clicked.
“The boy survived.”
I looked at the twins.
“Which boy?”
My grandfather answered:
“My grandson Gabriel.”
Silence.
I stared at my father.
My grandfather continued:
“Gabriel is the first male heir born after the original trust was sealed.”
I closed my eyes.
The entire family had been fighting over me.
Not because I was powerful.
Because my blood made me the legal owner of the evidence.
Then another recording began.
This one was my mother's voice.
“Gabriel, if you hear this…”
My heart broke.
“I was told not to trust your father.”
She sounded young.
“I trusted him anyway.”
“He promised me he would protect you.”
“He failed.”
A sob escaped her.
“But Clara is alive.”
“She has the second key.”
Clara looked shocked.
“Second key?”
My mother continued.
“The locket.”
Clara's hand flew to her throat.
Her old bracelet.
The family crest.
The second key.
I stared at her.
She began crying.
“I didn't know.”
The recording continued.
“The third key is carried by the child.”
Everyone went silent.
My father looked at the twins.
Then the vault doors slammed shut.
Automatic lockdown.
Red lights flooded the room.
My father looked toward the security monitor.
“She's here.”
“Who?”
“Eleanor.”
A camera activated.
My grandmother stood in the corridor.
Victor beside her.
And behind them—
dozens of armed men.
My grandmother smiled directly into the camera.
“Gabriel.”
Her voice came through the speaker.
“Bring me the child.”
My father stepped forward.
“No.”
“Alexander.”
“You've already lost.”
She laughed.
“You think you've won?”
Then she pressed a button.
A remote image appeared.
A hospital room.
Clara's face turned white.
“What is that?”
My grandmother answered:
“Your mother.”
Clara froze.
Her mother's old medical chart appeared.
Alive.
In a coma.
My grandmother whispered:
“She has been waiting for you for five years.”
Then the screen changed.
A timer appeared.
00:29:59
Twenty-nine minutes.
My grandmother smiled.
May you like
“Open the vault.”
“Or she dies.”
